Unit Code/Title F919 Care Practice and Provision

Candidate Name Emily Comments: Total awarded 42/50 (Centre awarded 46/50 after arithmetical error corrected)

AO1 Emily has included information on two relevant demographic factors. There is a sound description of how demographic characteristics are used to assess needs and inform decisions when planning the provision of services. There is a comprehensive description of the planning of services. The NHS Improvement Plan (2004) has been explained and a sound explanation of how this influences local planning and provision of services is given. Total awarded for AO1: 8/10 (3/3/2)

AO2 Emily does not include an explanation of the impact of the NHS Plan 2000 on care practice and provision. Marks have been awarded as there is implicit reference throughout and specifically in the conclusion. The impact of the NHS Plan 2000 has been discussed well from the perspective of the service user giving clear strengths and weaknesses. The service provider, namely the GP is also covered well. Total awarded for AO2: 9/10 (3/6)

AO3 There is evidence of a range of appropriate sources, primary through interviews with a GP and a councillor and referenced websites in text and bibliography (not wide range). Emily has used the information collected to carry out a comprehensive analysis of a wide range of quality assurance methods for both a counselling service and a GP. A range of appropriate examples has been included. The centre also awarded 12/15 ( 4/8) but have recorded this as 13/15 Total awarded for AO3: 12/15 (4/8)

Unit Code/Title F922

Candidate Name Emma Total Awarded 46/50

AO1 The consultant considers the mark awarded for AO1 is slightly lenient. For each area of development two clear patterns are described in detail. There is evidence of comprehensive knowledge and understanding. Each pattern shows progression across the entire age span 0-8. The consultant agrees the quality of the work submitted is mark band three. Emma provides a sound explanation of two methods used to monitor the development of children. Evidence should be strengthened by including why each method is important. The consultant would award 9/10. (6/3)

AO2 The consultant agrees with both the marks awarded and the teacher comments. When considering factors that influence development, Emma provides a comprehensive explanation about four different factors. Emma has produced a detailed comparison of Lucy’s development against the norms for each area of development from birth to eight years. This section could be condensed considerably by only concentrating on a few milestones for each area of development. The consultant would award 9/10 (3/3/3).

AO3 The consultant agrees with both the marks awarded and the teacher comments. There is evidence of a wide range of sources being used and the section is referenced throughout. This mark could have been improved if primary research had been carried out. Two theories have been researched and related to the child studied, namely categories of play and stages of play. There are at least four examples described for each theory. The consultant would award 14/15 (2/9/3).

AO4 The consultant considers the mark awarded for AO4 to be slightly lenient. Superb work, which demonstrates clear links to the specification. Recommendations for improvement could be strengthened. The consultant would award 14/15 (5/7/2). GCE Health & Social Care

Unit Code/Title F922 Child Development

Candidate Name Jezim Total Awarded 44/50

AO1 The mark awarded by the centre for AO1 is considered to be slightly lenient by the consultant. The use of sub-headings would help, as Jez appears confused at times between language development and intellectual development. For physical growth and development, two clear patterns of development are signposted. Jez is able to discuss in depth a ‘pattern’ for each, covering the age span 0 – 8 years. Language development appears to have one pattern covered; it is suggested that both verbal and non verbal communication are covered. For intellectual development two clear patterns are not signposted however drawing and writing have been described. For emotional/social development again two patterns of development are not clear. Jez has made a good attempt at describing the patterns of development through the use of continuous prose rather than relying on a tabular format. There is evidence of comprehensive knowledge and understanding. AO1B has also been awarded full marks. Jez provides a comprehensive explanation of two methods used to monitor the development of children. The consultant agrees the quality of the work submitted is mark band three. The consultant would award 8/10. (4/4)

AO2 The consultant considers the mark awarded for AO2 to be slightly harsh. When considering factors that influence development, Jez provides a sound explanation about a wide range of factors. Jez has produced a detailed comparison of Joshua’s development against the norms for each area of development from birth to eight years. Language development has been incorporated within intellectual development. This section could be condensed considerably by only concentrating on a few milestones for each area of development. The consultant would award 9/10 (2/4/3).

AO3 The consultant considers the mark awarded for AO3 to be slightly lenient. There is evidence of a wide range of sources being used and the section is referenced throughout. Two theories have been researched and related to the child studied, namely benefits of play and stages of play. There are at least four examples described for each theory. The consultant would award 13/15 (2/8/3).

AO4 The consultant agrees with both the marks awarded and the teacher comments. Superb work, which demonstrates clear links to the specification. Work could be strengthened by including clear aims for the activity. The consultant would award 14/15 (4/7/3). GCE Health & Social Care

Unit Code/Title F923 Mental Health Issues

Candidate Name Lucy

Total awarded 28/50

AO1 The mark awarded by the centre for AO1 is considered slightly lenient. Lucy has produced a sound description of three types of mental illness and their possible causes. She does consider the resultant health needs for each mental illness however this section could be strengthened. Lucy shows some understanding of the complexity of isolating causes for each illness. 7/10 (4/3)

AO2 The mark awarded by the centre for AO2 is considered to be slightly lenient. Lucy does not focus explicitly on the long and the short term effects of schizophrenia. Lucy covers the effects of schizophrenia on family and society well and the consultant would agree with the mark awarded for AO2b. 6/10 (3/3)

AO3 The mark awarded by the centre for AO3 is considered to be slightly lenient. Lucy uses limited sources of information, her bibliography lists seven websites however this is only one source of information. A range of sources would be three sources of information and a wide range, four sources of information. Lucy has suggested several preventative/ coping strategies however she does not make a clear link to Alex. She provides a sound analysis about the roles of the practitioners/ individuals that could provide support. There is reference to Alex throughout this section. The Mental Health Act is outlined and there is a basic understanding of the relevance to Alex. The consultant would award 7/15 (2/3/2).

AO4 The mark awarded by the centre for AO4 is agreed. Lucy has used a range of sources to provide a sound evaluation of the concepts of mental health. This is a well written and presented section. Lucy produced a sound explanation of possible positive and negative effects of portrayal in the media. The mark for AO4c is agreed. 8/15 (3/4/1) GCE Health & Social Care

Unit Code/Title F925 Research Methods in Health and Social Care

Candidate Name Philippa

F925 Total Awarded 37/50 (Centre awarded 36/50)

AO1 The mark awarded by the centre for AO1 is considered to be slightly harsh by the Consultant. The Consultant agrees that the explanation of the purposes of research is sound but that it is worth the top mark for MB2 and so awarded 4 marks. The candidate gives a sound description of three types of research methods. Total awarded for AO1, 8 marks (4/4).

AO2 The mark awarded by the centre for AO2 is agreed. The Consultant agrees that Philippa has given a comprehensive explanation of the rationale for her chosen research and warrants Mark Band 3. She has applied ethical issues in sufficient depth to be put again into Mark Band 2. Philippa does not give a comprehensive explanation of possible sources of error and bias in her research project and so the Consultant agrees with the mark awarded. Total awarded for AO2, 8marks (3/3/2).

AO3 Whilst the Consultant agrees with the mark awarded for AO3 there are differences in how the marks are allocated. The Consultant feels that Philippa has given an in- depth description of her chosen methods and has fully justified them and so was awarded 3 marks. In AO3B a wide range of sources is deemed to be four different sources; a range-three. Best practice would expect secondary sources to be summarised and referenced rather than included as the original documents, albeit annotated. For these reasons whilst it was felt Philippa’s work to be worth MB2 it should only be awarded 3 marks. The Consultant agrees with the assessor in that the analysis is sound, not comprehensive, and is worth 4 marks. Total awarded for AO3, 10 marks (3/3/4).

AO4 The Consultant agrees with both the marks awarded and the teacher comments. Total awarded for AO4, 11 marks (6/3/2).
