Course structure

Possible additions to assessment for the course:

 The personal financial literacy standards may be useful

Eg 24709 (2 credit) and 24697 (1 credit) There are supporting resources for this from the www.sorted.org.nz

 The three level one unit standards that are being retained (trig, algebra and measurement/estimation).

Resources for numeracy

In addition to the NZAMT thematic units (from MAP days) that are being updated, we identified three sources of potentially useful for teaching numeracy thematically:

1. A series of books called “maths in ....” eg Maths in Television, Maths in sport, etc http://www.eton.co.nz/results/x_page/2/q/maths+in.html?id=n63Qgx89&mv_pc=s

2. A series of books called “National Pre-apprenticeship maths and literacy for ....”

Eg National Pre-apprenticeship maths and literacy for Hairdressing http://www.eton.co.nz/results/x_page/3/q/maths+in.html

A+ National Pre-apprenticeship Maths and Literacy for Hairdressing The range of A+ National Pre-apprenticeship Maths and Literacy write-in workbook resources help to prepare students seeking to gain a variety of apprenticeships, traineeships and accreditations. They combine practical, real-world scenarios and terminology specifically relevant to their chosen industry, and provide students with the mathematical and literacy skills they need to confidently pursue a career within that trade.

Mirroring the format of current apprenticeship entry assessments, Pre-apprenticeship Maths and Literacy for Hairdressing includes hundreds of questions to improve students’ potential of gaining a successful assessment outcome of 75–80% and above. This workbook will therefore help to increase students’ eligibility to obtain a Hairdressing Apprenticeship.

Pre-apprenticeship Maths and Literacy for Hairdressing further supports and consolidates concepts that students studying VET (Vocational Educational Training) may use, as a number of VCE VET programs are also approved pre- apprenticeships and pre-accreditations. This workbook is also a valuable resource for older students aiming to revisit basic literacy and maths in their preparation to re-enter the workforce at the vocational level.

3. Contextualised ICT, Literacy & Numeracy Resources for Vocational and Academic Learning Website of free printable reseources http://www.skillsworkshop.org/context.htm eg E3-L2 Functional Maths Kitchen Project is a great set of task. Task 1 is based on fitting out a kitchen and involves scale diagrams, measures, money, VAT and more. Task 2 is based on commercial office rental prices. Fully mapped to FM criteria.
