These visionary ladies, 24 ten in number, included Mrs. R.H. Clayton, the “founding 25 mother”; Mrs. J.H. Clayton; Mrs. S.W. Clayton; Mrs. H.W. 26 Hughes, Jr.; Mrs. C.P. Kizer; Mrs. J.R. Moorer; Mrs. P.W. Pate; 27 Mrs. W.A. Pate, Jr.; Mrs. K.M. Philen; and Mrs. J.H. Price; and 28 29 Whereas, from their very first event, the community-wide Outdoor 30 Christmas Decorations Contest, which the club members continue 31 to sponsor every year, these dedicated gardeners have devoted 32 themselves to beautifying Dorchester; and 33 34 Whereas, members make flower arrangements for hospitals in the 35 Lowcountry, Camp Happy Days, Dorchester Post Office, and area 36 churches. Among their many other worthy projects are the 37 landscaping of a church parsonage, Dorchester Volunteer Fire 38 Department, and the Carolina Fence Garden at 39 Harleyville-Ridgeville School; and 40 41 Whereas, hard-working Ivy Garden Club members also participate 42 in the Adopt-A-Highway Program and have faithfully landscaped
1 [4704] 1 1 and maintained the railroad right of way along U.S. Highway 78 2 since the inception of the club. In addition, the organization has 3 made donations to World Gardening, Blue Star Memorial 4 Highway, Camp Wildwood, CARE, the South Carolina Nature 5 Conservancy, Carolina Memorial Gardens in Columbia, and 6 numerous other causes of merit; and 7 8 Whereas, Dorchester owes many of its trees to the diligence of the 9 Ivy Garden Club, which plants them in observance of Arbor Day, 10 as well as on other occasions. On December 10, 2005, the ladies 11 planted a favorite, the Patriotic Tree at the Dorchester Post Office, 12 in honor of all who have served and are serving our country; and 13 14 Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pleasure in 15 recognizing those who work to improve the natural beauty of the 16 Palmetto State, and the members wish to extend their gratitude to 17 the Ivy Garden Club for its exemplary work toward this end. Now, 18 therefore, 19 20 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 21 22 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 23 by this resolution, congratulate Dorchester’s Ivy Garden Club on 24 the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary and commend the club on its 25 many years of contributing to the beautification of the State of 26 South Carolina. 27 28 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 29 the Ivy Garden Club. 30 ----XX---- 31
