Architecture The Main Structure Egyptian houses were made of mud bricks, they were coated with limestone. Mud bricks were called adobes they were formed and left in the sun to dry. Roofs were made of papyrus reeds and o roof would usually be flat. Town houses were tall and skinny because they needed to fit as many houses in a village as they could. Also the town houses would have up to four floors. Most houses were built around the Nile River to access water for there crops. However, due to this they would have to build on high ground in case of a flood. There were three trud designs for peasant dwellings. Firstly a single house could have four small rooms. Alternatively people also had the option of living with four rooms around a courtyard to share. Another option of a house is one main room in the middle with four rooms around it.
Design + Structure Egyptian houses were simply furnished, most houses only had one bed. They would sleep on the floor or on the roof if it was to hot inside the house. Another interesting feature is that most windows were as high off the ground as they could go. They do this to keep the sun’s glare out as well as dust and heat. Wealthy homes had tiled floors and painted walls. If you were poor you would make your own hand made wall design. Other facts are that the only things that are made of stone are coffins and some temples. Another fact is that if your part of the pharaohs court your house would have a couple of cool rooms and a huge garden. Temples of Aten
The most important temple in Egypt is The Great Temple of Aten, it’s the worship center of the gods. The pharaoh Akhenaten made this temple to worship the gods but especially the god Aten. Aten was the Egyptian sun also known as the disk, it’s streams of light were thought to be it’s arms reaching down on the worshippers (look to the left to see Akhenaten offering food to Aten). The enormous temple was 800 meters long and 300 meters wide surrounded by a high wall. You would be privileged to enter into the temple. A remarkable feature of the temple is that there are two tables of fruit, vegetables, flowers and meat for people that are not privileged to enter.
Obelisks
Obelisk were but at the entrance of temples symbolizing the sun god Ra. They were also used to symbolize a person after they die so they will not be forgotten. These tall monuments had hieroglyphics telling story’s of what they did in there lives. Obelisks were for people usually with higher class like priests and pharaohs. Most obelisks were built in pairs, made of stone, granite or a similar stone and at lest 70 feet tall. The tip of an obelisk represents the ground of were the sun god made the universe. The oldest obelisk is 4000 years old were the youngest is 2000 years old.
