MOCAN Child Care Work Group Meeting March 2, 2015
Attendees: Megan Klenke, Cindy DeBlauw, Sarah Gaines, Nola, Deborah Markenson, Lynn Cole, Barbara Keene
MOCAN work group meetings- The April MOCAN meeting will be replaced by the Obesity Conference. Megan will be on maternity leave for 6 weeks beginning in mid March. We will skip a May meeting as it is so close to the obesity conference. In June we will follow-up on the Obesity Conference results.
Program Updates: MU Extension- Sara Gable has released her Family Style meal services on-line training for child care providers. MOCCA shared them with her Taking Steps group.
DHSS- CACFP proposed rules were released and Ann McCormack invited the group to submit comments by last Friday. If members have not yet submitted comments please do so ASAP. July 1st is the anticipated date for implementation of Eat Smart Guidelines in the MO Accreditation criteria.
Cooking Matters webpage will be launched to assist with scheduling. 5-7 more classes will be offered in KC, Moberly, South St. Louis, Springfield, SE- Sikeston. Home providers are the target audience for these trainings. Weighing In and CCA will distribute the promotional flier to their distribution lists.
Child Care Health Consultants continue to upload trainings to for child care provider clock hours. Several health departments have also created their own trainings over the years and these will also be uploaded. Fittastic trainings will be developed for providers in communities where the program is already adopted.
Weighing In conducted a Healthy Lifestyles Framework on February 20th in Columbia. The framework has 6 components 1) consistent health assessment 2) messaging – Fittastic 3) policy 4) tracking results 5) customized plan health plan based on health assessment 6)integration of efforts within a community. Another training for LPHAs is planned for March. Several LPHAs have adopted these strategies. Fittastic website lists existing enrolled communities and partners.
Proposed Legislation-HB707 requires licensed facilities to implement a safe sleep policy- AAP and CCA are supportive of this policy and perhaps AAP is testifying Representative Franklin- any day care center shall notify parents if any attendees are not immunized
Obesity Conference April 21-22, 2015 in Columbia Child care will be addressed on the first day and through a panel on the second day.
Child Care Work Group work plan Barbara will soon receive the Team Nutrition RFP and could incorporate Goals 2 and 3 into the proposal application. Deborah recommended the group focus primarily on Goal 1 for the next 1-2 years because it is most achievable.
