Washington County, MD Newton’s Laws CHALLENGE

The Content:

Science: MS-PS2-1. Apply Newton’s Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two colliding objects.* MS-PS2-2. Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object. Engineering: 3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.

The Challenge: You have learned about Newton’s Three Laws of Motion in Science, Reading and Physical Education. Using that background knowledge, you will create a project that demonstrates ALL THREE laws in action in a real- world setting. Your project MUST include the following:  A research component- o Evidence that you have researched your project idea.

o You will need to provide research about Newton’s three laws. You will need to explain each one and how it is connected to your project.

o Your research MUST be from reliable sources.

o You MAY want to consult industry professionals in your selected field.

 Engineering Design Process- you will go through the EDP to complete your project. You will need to document the steps you have taken. This can be done through written journaling, graphic organizers, multimedia presentations, or any other creative means you decide.

 Mathematical Models- you will need to show your mathematical calculations as they relate to Newton’s Laws of Motion.

 A presentation that presents your connections to the content, research, Engineering Design Process, math calculations, the connection to the content standards, and an evaluation of your project.

Materials: You may use any materials that you can find in our classroom. You will also be permitted to bring in recycled materials and materials from home (with parent permission). You will create a budget for your project using Newton’s Laws 5th Grade GATE

Resources: Below is a list of resources you can use. PLEASE feel free to find additional resources to help with your project. Websites:  http://www.sciencechannel.com/games-and-interactives/newtons-laws-of-motion-interactive/ - Newton’s Laws explination  http://www.neok12.com/Laws-of-Motion.htm - Large selection of MANY resources, quizzes, videos, lessons  http://www.nasa.gov/pdf/544862main_E2_OnTarget_C2.pdf - Project idea  http://nasasearch.nasa.gov/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&affiliate=nasa&query=laws+of+motion&commit=Search – List of links to lessons/ Projects  https://app.nepris.com/# - connects students with industry leaders Apps:  Ubersense- take a video and it puts it in slow motion to see forces and interactions

Assessment: (Student created- students reviewed the challenge. Groups developed a list of criteria. The points possible are determine the number of groups who had that criteria listed.) Criteria: Points Possible Points Earned Incorporating all THREE of 3 Newton’s Laws Details in Presentations 3
