Energy and Climate Change

Objectives This course is designed to familiarise students with issues concerning energy and climate change mitigation. It introduces science, history, politics and economics of climate change, and focuses on how these relate to energy policy. Students will also develop a detailed understanding of greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector, and the potential for mitigation, and will learn some practical, quantitative tools for the analysis of energy and climate change issues. On completion of this course, students will have an understanding of the complex challenge of climate change and a range of dimensions in seeking a solution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in South Africa and globally.

Course Content

 Climate change: the science basics and impacts  The international response to climate change  Economics of climate change  The context of addressing mitigation in South Africa  Analysis of GHGs  Carbon markets  Mitigation options and potential – electricity supply, liquid fuel and transport, energy efficiency and DSM, long-term mitigation scenarios for South Africa, economics and regulatory instruments, cities and climate change mitigation  International support – technology transfer, international finance, low carbon economy and society  Cities and climate change mitigation

Course Lecturers

Several of the lectures/seminars will be presented by external lecturers who are considered to be specialists in their fields.

Course Information

Who should attend? This course will be of benefit to professionals from government, business, labour and NGOs who would like to gain an understanding of the intersection of energy and climate change issues, which are essential for energy policy in South Africa and climate policy globally. Format The course consists of a one-week intensive course. The course is part of a module in the Energy Research Centre’s Masters programme, and Masters students will need to do additional work, notably reading, assignments and a research project either side of the lecture week. Other participants may attend the intensive week only, for continuing professional development or general purposes (no formal credit is given, or follow-up work required). Cost The fee for the course will be R7400. This fee includes lecture notes and readings which will be available electronically for download on a Vula site before the lectures commence. Details will be sent to participants. Discounts for staff and students of UCT, and students of other tertiary education institutes are available under certain circumstances. Payment details are on the application form. Certificates and CPD Points A certificate of attendance will be awarded to CPD participants for each course. Participants need to attend 80% of the lectures to qualify for an attendance certificate. According to guidelines set out by the Engineering Council of South Africa, attendance of this course will earn participants 5 credits towards Category 1 (Developmental Activities). Venue The Gallery, African Studies Building (Upper Campus). Date and Time 08h30 – 17h00 Monday 28 May – Friday 1 June 2012.
