I. Project Summary

Students in grades K-5 music classes will read, act, sing, and experience high quality literature in the form of books, and plays based on children’s songs and musical literature. Students will then have the opportunity to take the materials home to share with family and friends. The combination of music and literature will result in an increased excitement for reading and help struggling readers improve fluency and confidence in their reading abilities. Because the materials purchased with this grant are not consumable, students, classroom teachers, and reading specialists will have the opportunity to improve fluency by connecting music and literature for years to come.

II. Project Plan

OBJECTIVES 1. Students will improve reading fluency through performance, discussion and exploration of familiar songs and nursery rhymes.

2. Students will read, sing, write and illustrate their own storybooks based upon examples from our music reading library.

2. Students will expand their love of both reading and music while gaining confidence in their reading abilities.

STUDENTS AFFECTED Over 425 Students in grades K-5 will experience these books in music class. Additionally, all Lincoln students and staff will have access to these resources which will be housed in the school library after they have been presented in class. Because they will become a part of our school library, students and staff for years to come will benefit from this grant. This grant directly relates, to the music, reading, library, and art curriculum.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

1. Each month I will introduce one to two books per grade level in a variety of ways

Some of the activities that we will do with these books include:  Teacher reading/CD Listening Examples that model fluency and expression  Students reading aloud as a group, as individuals, to a friend, to their class, to another class.  Singing as a class and as individuals  Adding instruments to reflect moods, actions and events in the story  Acting out stories and performing them for each other and other classes  Writing and illustrating storybooks

2. Nursery rhymes and songs used in these books contain a number of sight words that students are studying in grades K-2. I will work with students on identifying, using and spelling their word study words that are used in songs.

3. To supplement this grant I will create a bound book of nursery rhymes for each child in extended day kindergarten to take home and practice reading and singing.

4. After books have been introduced and explored in the music room, they will be available for students and teachers to check out from our school library.

PROJECT EVALUATION

I will evaluate the success of this project by comparing DRA fluency assessments that are completed by teachers in fall and spring.

I will monitor how often the books purchased with this grant are checked out from the school library. I will ask a select group of struggling readers to complete self assessments on how they feel about themselves as a reader at the beginning and end of the year. Students will then compare how their view of themselves as a reader has changed.
