Tornado Safety

Tornadoes can occur any time. Tornados generally occur during the spring and early summer months. Tornado winds can swirl at 200 mph or more and can destroy just about anything. Generally, there are weather signs and warnings that will alert you to take precautions. Please take the following actions for protection.

Tornado Safety Rules  Keep alert to weather conditions and listen to radio and television stations for updated information.  Know what Tornado Watch and Warning mean — A Tornado Watch means a tornado is possible in your area. A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been sighted and may be headed for your area, in which case you should take shelter immediately.  Keep phone lists of key employees and customers and provide lists to the key employees.

Safe Places During Tornadoes  The safe place/s for this facility can be found ______.  Know where your shelter is before you need it and take shelter immediately when you hear a tornado warning or see a funnel cloud.  DO NOT open windows or doors during a tornado!! This is a myth that can injure or kill. For added protection, get under something strong and cover your body.  Pick a safe place in your facility where employees could gather during a tornado. If there is no basement, choose a center hallway, stairwell, bathroom or closet on the lowest floor. Make sure there are no windows or glass doors in the area. Keep the tornado safety space uncluttered.  Protect your head and make yourself as small a target as possible.  Put together a Disaster Supplies Kit in a clearly labeled, easy-to-grab container. Include bottled water, battery-powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries, first aid kit and work gloves.  IN YOUR VEHICLE-The least desirable place to be during a tornado is in a motor vehicle. Do not try to outrun a tornado in your car. If you see a tornado, or a warning is issued for your immediate area, stop your vehicle and get out. Seek shelter in a nearby ditch or ravine away from where you parked your vehicle. Do not get under the vehicle or park under highway overpasses.  IN THE OPEN-If caught outside during a tornado, and there is no shelter immediately available, lie in a ditch or gully, or other low spot in the ground. Protect your body and head with anything available. Do not go into a grove of trees or hide under a vehicle.

After the Tornado  Emergency Services personnel are usually on the scene quickly after a tornado. Keep employees together and wait for help. Listen to the radio for information about disaster relief and assistance available.  If you are outside, do not go into damaged buildings or touch downed power lines. Wait for help to search for others. If your building appears undamaged, check carefully for gas or other utility line breaks. If the lights are out, use only a flashlight; don't use matches, lighters or any open flame.
