An Update on the Latest Digital Radio Development Worldwide for July 2011

Eureka-147 DAB/T-DMB Reported on 1 Jun 11: The new Digital Radio UK “more to love” content campaign was being run in conjunction with major retailers and highlights the availability of the extra genres and stations on digital radio and includes radio advertising, retailer consumer mailings and point of sale materials. The campaign, which was on air on commercial radio stations for two weeks in Jun, brought to life the genres available on digital radio, including sport, rock, jazz, dance and RnB, news and drama. The campaign was co-timed with the BBC’s Radio 4 Extra trails running on BBC TV and radio. As part of this campaign, participating retailers including Amazon, Co-op, Currys, John Lewis, M&S, PC World and Tesco were mailing their customers to raise awareness of a range of digital radio stations and genres. Major retailers including Currys, Tesco and independent electrical retailers had also been provided with new Digital Radio UK in-store point of sale materials. This year has seen the launch of national digital-only stations in the UK, such as BBC Radio 4 Extra and Jazz FM, and the digital extension of other networks such as Smooth, Capital and Kiss. Reported on 6 Jun 11: Commercial Radio Australia (CRA) brought together nearly 100 motor vehicle industry representatives at the recent Sydney and Melbourne automotive workshops to move digital radio listening into more Australian motor vehicles. Vehicle product managers, engineering planning teams, industry association members, retailers and manufacturers attended the workshops to hear from the radio industry on the status of digital radio in Australia and the progress towards the rollout of digital radio in regional Australia. BMW was the first manufacturer in Australia to announce they would be including DAB+ digital radio as an option. Internationally, 100 delegates from 65 different companies, including leading car manufacturers Audi, BMW, Honda, Skoda, Hyundai, VW, Daimler and Lotus, attended a workshop held end of May 2011 in Berlin by WorldDMB. A similar system to Australia is being considered in Europe that would be a Pan–European standard of DAB, DAB+, DMB. The DAB+ standard in those vehicles would then function in Australia as well. Integrating digital radio into vehicles, both in Australia and internationally, will enable the delivery of real-time traffic updates. Radio stations could broadcast text based traffic messages or images to deliver traffic flow information snapshots directly to motorists’ digital radios and in the future add information about road works and parking lot capacities. The Sydney and Melbourne workshops outlined the digital radio options available to the 16 million already registered vehicles in Australia, including a self or custom fit car adaptor like the Pure Highway or one of a number of the aftermarket products on the market; the Orion, Bluestate, Crystal, JVC and Kenwood.

Reported on 8 Jun 11: Hong Kong has moved a step closer to the launch of digital audio broadcasting (DAB) as the channel group numbers for operators were determined on 8 Jun 11 for the provision of quality sound broadcasting service. Furthermore, the Hong Kong Government plans to install a rebroadcasting system in government road tunnels for transmitting DAB channels. A thematic website and a radio announcement in the public interest (API) produced by the Hong Kong Government were also rolled out to further enhance public awareness of DAB. The three licensees and RTHK will provide round-the-clock DAB services on a total of 18 channels (three each for Metro and Phoenix U, seven for DBC and five for RTHK), offering a wide variety of program choices. Formal service will be launched by the end of this year. Preparation for the DAB service has also made progress in other aspects. The Hong Kong Government proposes to install a specific rebroadcasting system at 11 government road tunnels including tunnels with the highest traffic volume such as Aberdeen Tunnel, Cross Harbour Tunnel, Lion Rock Tunnel and Tseung Kwan O Tunnel. Apart from transmitting DAB channels to users travelling in the tunnels, such a system can help ensure that DAB listeners in the tunnels receive

The Hong Kong Government also launched a dedicated website providing a wide range of information on DAB services, including its benefits, its development in Hong Kong and ways to receive DAB. The radio API promotes the benefits of DAB, signing off with the slogan "Quality sound, quality visuals, and quality choices" to highlight the brand-new audio-visual experience brought about by DAB. Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Reported on 16 Jun 11: The single test frequency of 100.1MHz carried three programme channels - Gold DRM (FM), Rainbow DRM (FM) and AIR news in Journaline and its reception was measured by a test vehicle going in four directions from central New Delhi where the transmitter was installed. The Nautel VS-1 transmitter with 300W output power (500W radiated power) along with the RFmondial DRM+ Modulator and the Fraunhofer DRM Content Server were used. Two test modes were measured - robust 4-QAM and high capacity 16-QAM and the DRM+ coverage was found to be comparable with that of analogue FM station operating at approximately 5 times the power of the DRM+ signal. This week long DRM+ showcase (23 - 27 May 2011) in New Delhi also included an extensive workshop on DRM technology covering crucial issues of planning, transition, simulcast, content and receivers. A large number of participants from all across the country attended the sessions that also had interactive discussions with DRM experts. DRM members Nautel (Canada), Fraunhofer IIS, RFmondial, University of Hanover (Germany), KETI (South Korea), Analog Devices (USA) and BBC (UK) took part in the test either with equipment or experts or both. AIR has already adopted DRM30 for its SW/MW network and DRM+ will play a complementary role operating in VHF band II. Source: www.drm.org
