PPS Impact Private Practice Section, American Physical Therapy Association Guidelines for Authors – Member Spotlight

Impact magazine, published 11 times a year by the Private Practice Section (PPS) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), is a primary source of information dedicated to fostering the growth, economic viability, and business success of physical therapist-owned physical therapy practices. Impact’s mission is to inform PPS members about pertinent topics, including practice management, membership benefits, legislative updates, committee and task force work, resources, and educational seminars. Impact also provides a forum to discuss professional issues and ideas.

Impact encourages all members of the PPS community to contribute. Article ideas, practice profiles, newsworthy information, book reviews, letters to the editor, and opinions are always welcome, and may be sent to Nancy Berry at [email protected]

Member Spotlight Description: In each issue, Impact will feature a typical PPS member who will answer the following questions. The format is intended to be brief – a snapshot highlighting one of our members. The article will include a photo, preferably a candid, informal one. The idea is to create an informative, interesting, recurring feature. Members should be integrally involved in the day-to-day operations of a private practice.

Article requirements:

 Recommended length (NB: one page = approximately 700 words): o Member Spotlight: 500-750 words  Submission should be typed, double-spaced, and submitted within the article submission form. Please do not use all-cap or italic type.  Articles should be submitted as an email attachment, preferably in Microsoft Word.  Authors should provide byline and contact information, including: full name; title; degree(s), designator(s), and other credential(s); agency affiliation; location; and email and USPS addresses.  Authors must include complete references when discussing particular concepts, principles, or statistics, cited in AMA format.  Digital photographs may also be submitted in either black-and-white or color and must be of at least 300 dpi resolution.  Articles may not be self-promoting, nor may they promote products by name. When determined to be relevant and of interest to other PPS members, product reviews by members may be allowed at the discretion of the managing editor.  Material published in Impact becomes the property of PPS and may not be published or reproduced, in whole or in part, without written permission. Requests for permission to reprint material published in Impact should be directed to the PPS office ([email protected] ). Any permitted publication, reprint, or reproduction of material published in Impact must reference Impact and indicate that it is property of PPS. Articles requested and written for a specific assignment should be sent to the Editorial Board member who made the request and who is responsible fore the assignment.  Author represents and warrants that all submitted materials are the original work of the author, the author has no knowledge of any third party claims regarding any rights to the materials submitted, and that none of the materials submitted violate any rights of others including, without limitation, any copyrights or privacy rights, and that the materials are factually accurate. Author agrees that upon submission of the article and any related materials that the same become the property of PPS. Authors must complete and return the attached disclosure statement. The above requirements also are summarized in checklist format for the author’s final review.

Editorial process:

 When an article is received, an acknowledgment is sent to the author.  Following review by the managing editor and/or the Editorial Board, a decision is made on whether to publish the article.  If the article is approved for publication, it is edited by Impact.  The author may request a final review before publication.  By submitting an article, including graphs, charts, sample forms, photographs, or other similar information, the author thereby consents to publication by Impact of any and all such submitted materials. PPS member status can be found at ppsapta.org, under Membership Directory or by asking your author. Does the article specifically Edit to use generic terms instead of name brands as name products or services? much as possible, such as changing “Cybex” to “isokinetic equipment.” Articles that are based on specific products or services should probably be reclassified as “reviews” instead of features.

Is the article double- spaced?

Has the content been  Rewrite sentences that start with repetitive edited to address common statements, such as “It is important that…” or grammatical and “There are….” terminology issues?  Spell out words with contractions, such as changing “don’t” to “do not”  Use “PT” to refer to physical therapist, but spell out “physical therapy.”  Avoid use of the word “reimbursement” as much as appropriate.
