Curriculum Vitae Seth C. Lewis 2/21/08

Seth C. Lewis • bio

Seth Lewis has a B.A. in communications from Brigham Young University (2002), an M.B.A. from Barry University (2005), and he is a second-year Ph.D. student in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin (anticipated graduation: 2010). In 2005 he was a Fulbright Scholar in Spain.

His research focuses on the social impact of cultural and technological convergence in the media—and what it means for the future of journalism in a digital age. In particular, Lewis is exploring the changing nature of news production and professional identity as media work evolves to meet new economic, cultural and technological demands. As the routines and roles of professional journalists change, so do the contexts for collective action and critique by amateur journalists online; it’s at this nexus that Lewis hopes to study the future of journalism in better engaging and collaborating with the public sphere.

Since coming to the University of Texas, he has conducted a major survey of young adults to explore their approach toward news in the future. He also has researched the framing of the War on Terrorism, the readability of news stories, and the management styles of newspaper editors. Previously, as a Fulbright Scholar in Spain, Lewis studied the cultural convergence of bilingual journalism in Spain; his peer-reviewed article on the subject will appear in Journalism Studies in 2008. Additionally, he studied the Spanish economy during his stay in Madrid, and has published a business case study on cross- cultural management.

As a professional journalist, Lewis was assistant sports editor at The Miami Herald, where he began as a copy editor and page designer in 2002. He has worked in the media since he was a 16-year-old reporter for his hometown newspaper, The Outlook in Gresham, Oregon. As a reporter and freelancer, he has written for more than 20 publications, from magazines such as Foreign Policy and Nieman Reports to newspapers such as The Miami Herald, The (Portland) Oregonian, and The Salt Lake Tribune.

Lewis is a research assistant and a teaching assistant for the copy editing course at the University of Texas. CURRICULUM VITAE SETH C. LEWIS 6/1/18
