Katie Little UNC-DUKE Pg. 1 UNC beat Duke in a 101-87 victory Wednesday night as students across campus watched with excitement on TV. and journeyed to celebrate the big win on Franklin Street.

Fans greeted the victory, the Heels’ fourth in a row at Cameron Indoor Stadium, with much enthusiasm.

My viewing experience, like the Heels’ play, got off to a slow start.

My pre-game party occurred at the Franklin Street Kinko’s where I took passport photos for my study-abroad application, due Thursday. Afterwards, in the middle of the first half, I came back to my sorority house, Alpha Delta Pi.

The normally chatty crowd was silent. I could hear my own ice crunching as the girls watched in suspense as the once wide lead turned into a deficit.

“Rebound!,” yelled twenty girls and a lone boyfriend in the living room every few minutes.

The nervous minutes morphed into loud cheering as the scoreboard changed in our favor.

After the game ended, we left ADPi for a post-game celebration on Franklin Street.

Chapel Hill police were already stationed on the street for crowd control.

Bonfires illuminated the road and grew in size as the crowd did. A Christmas tree fueled one of the fires higher than the crowd.

While there, students reflected on what the greatest college sports rivalry means to them.

“It’s not something I really think about too much,” said sophomore Alycia Menear. “I just know I hate Duke with a passion.”

Passion was definitely present in the large crowd as fans shouted “TAR” and “HEELS” in succession. Verses of the alma mater and fight song attempted to drown out the helicopters flying overhead. Katie Little UNC-DUKE Pg. 2 Daredevil fans jumped over the bonfires to show their excitement over the win. Some students were more enthusiastic about the victory than others.

“It means a lot to me,” said sophomore Chip Summers. “I got arrested last night, and I’m pretty sure I would rather win and get arrested than lose and not.”
