Susan Athena Can You Help Me

I need to classify each underlined complement in the following sentences as a direct object, an indirect object, a predicate adjective or a predicate nominative.

I put my answers down and would like for someone to check them.

1. Pamela ws the star of the play. (I put predicate nominative)

CORRECT

2. The guidebook gave the lost tourist the wrong directions. (I put direct obj) the indirect object is either “tourist” or “the lost tourist” but not “lost”. It must be an INdirect object, though, because of the Verbs of Giving rule. In verbs about giving things, the D.O. is the thing that is being given, and the I.O. is the receiver.

3. Monet is famous for the way his paintings captured light. (I put pred. nom) predicate adjective, because famous is an adjective describing Monet.

4. Manuel offered Anita some good advice. (DO) indirect object, because of the Verbs of Giving rule.

5. Ms. Benton is our next door neighbor. (Predicate nominative)

CORRECT

6. Bring me the cutting board, please. (Indirect Object)

CORRECT

7. The box was big and awkard to handle. (Predicate Adjective)

CORRECT

8. The library receives many new books each week. (Direct Object)

CORRECT

9. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16. (Direct Object)

CORRECT 10. The new president of the bank will be Ms. Morales. (Predicate Nom)

CORRECT

11. Angel became a professional jai alai player. (Direct Object)

Predicate nominative: tricky because it’s not with “is”, but as you can see, “player” renames “Angel” so it is a predicate nominative.

12. Amelia Earhart flew her plane across the atlantic in 1932. (Direct Object)

CORRECT

13. The glow from the diamond is dazzling! (Predicate Adjective)

CORRECT

14. Thomas Edison provided people with electric light bulbs. (Direct Object)

CORRECT (a tricky one, but you’re right)

15. New York City was briefly the capital of the United States. (Predicate Nom)

CORRECT

16 The simpsons showed him slides of China. (Indirect Object)

CORRECT

17. My chair was hard and uncomfortable. (Predicate Adjective)

CORRECT

18. The machine can produce two crates a day. (Direct Object)

CORRECT

19. Have you seen Akiho yellow sweater? (Pedicate Nom) direct object. Try turning it around so it’s not a question: “You have seen Akiho’s yellow sweater.” Then it becomes apparent that sweater is the D.O. of “see”

20. The house appeared empty. (Predicate Adject)

CORRECT

Now for the hard part. I just cant seem to get this when I have to pick it out of a sentence. I dont know where to start.

Write the complement or complements in each sentence. Then, identfy each complement as a direct object, indirect object a predicate nominative.Write none if the sentence does not contain a complement.

6. Nora sent postcards from Argentina to her friends. postcards DO

Be careful here! Send is a verb of giving, and if the sentence said, “sent her friends postcards”, then postcards would be the DO, and friends would be the IO. But here, because it says “to her friends”, then “to her friends” is a prepositional phrase, so “friends” can’t be an IO – it’s not a complement at all.
