THE PROGRAM COMPONENTS The Extended Learning Academies (ELA), CAHSEE Intensive Instruction Program (CIIP), Extended School Year for Special Education (ESY), Supplemental Educational Services (SES), After School Education & Safety (ASES), 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC), Ready, Set, Go!, Youth Services, Outdoor and Environmental Education, and Performing Arts programs provide a safe place for students to go after school, as well as opportunities for education and enrichment. The three components of the programs include: 1. Academic Tutorial Program: Students study subjects such as Reading, Math, Writing, Science, Social Studies, and Computers. In addition, high school ASSETS Programs focus on college preparation and job readiness. 2. Recreational Program: Students participate in physical activities including Intramural Sports, Structured Physical Activity, Dance, and Aerobics. 3. Enrichment Program: Students participate in classes such as Life Skills, Art, Cooking, and Music. DID YOU KNOW THAT IN LOS ANGELES:  Over 178, 492 students participate in Beyond the Bell programs on a daily basis?  Beyond the Bell programs are in over 600 schools?  Students who participate in afterschool programs have improved attendance?

WHAT A DIFFERENCE AFTER SCHOOL MAKES! There's no question that today's youth need safe, stimulating places to go after school.  More than 28 million school-age children have parents who work outside of the home during after school hours (US Department of Labor, 2003).  Of the 28 million school-age children, 14.3 million are left to look after themselves when the school day ends. (America After 3 PM, May 2004).  Childcare averages between $4,000-$6,000 dollars per year.  Working mothers' number one concern is the safety of their children, especially in the after school hours. These fears outrank concerns about the quality or funding of their education.

 Research shows that the peak hours for juvenile crime, sexual activity, experimentation with drugs, alcohol and cigarettes peak between the hours of 3p.m. to 6p.m. (Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, 2002)

After school programs make a difference!  Teens who participate in after school programs are three times LESS likely to skip classes than teens who do participate. They are also three times LESS likely to use drugs, consume alcohol, smoke cigarettes and engage in sexual activity. (YMCA of the USA, March 2001)  Parents reported that their child's after school program helped them balance work and family life (Policy Studies Associates, Inc. February 2001):  60% of students said they missed less work than before because of the program.  59% of students said that it supported them in keeping their jobs.  Students in a statewide program in California improved their standardized test scores (SAT 9) in reading and math by percentages almost twice that of other students and also had better attendance. PROGRAMS Extended Learning Academies (ELA) : Provides academic assistance in English language arts, English language development, mathematics, and/or preparation for the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). Offered after school and Saturdays at year-round schools. CAHSEE Intensive Instruction Program (CIIP) : An intensive instructional program designed to provide instruction in English language arts and mathematics that prepare students to pass the CAHSEE. Extended School Year for Special Education (ESY) : Extended School Year is an off-track program for students with disabilities to maintain skills and behaviors as identified on their Individualized Education Plan. Supplemental Educational Services (SES): Free academic tutoring by state approved providers to eligible students at schools designated as Program Improvement for at least two years. Offered through the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. After School Education & Safety (ASES) 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) : Beyond the Bell offers academic, enrichment and recreation programs before school, after school, and weekends at elementary, middle and high schools that are linked with state standards, culturally responsive pedagogy, and accountability to increase student achievement and graduation rates for all students. The Take Action Leadership Campaign develops high school student leaders within the after school programs. Ready, Set, Go! : Offers before school academic and enrichment activities developed to meet the academic and supervision needs of elementary school students beginning ninety minutes before the instructional day. Youth Services: Provides an after school safe haven for children grades 2-8. Trained staff plan and conduct the program from the end of the core" school day until 6 p.m. each day. Serves all elementary and middle schools in LAUSD. The program is permissive where participants arrive and leave at their own discretion. Outdoor and Environmental Education: Provides hands-on, standards based instruction in life, earth, and physical science. The program is characterized by field studies utilizing the inquiry cycle and support for Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI2) in an environment located away from the school site. Overnight residential centers operate at two locations. Performing Arts Programs: Provides various performing and learning opportunities to students District- wide in music, dance and art programs. Programs include the All District High School Honor Bands (Marching and Jazz), Youth Orchestras, Band and Drill Team Tournaments, Dance Workshops and Art contests.
