Job Title: Clinical Research Fellow

Department: Clinical Cardiology and Imaging Section

Salary: £31,838 - £41,564 plus £1,505 London Allowance per annum

Responsible to: Professor Martin Cowie

Key Working Relationships: Members of Clinical Cardiology, other research (Internal) unit staff, administrative and support staff

Key Working Relationships: Clinical, research and support staff at (External) Royal Brompton Hospital (Clinical Cardiology and Sleep and Ventilation Unit), collaborators and suppliers

Location: Royal Brompton Campus

Contract: Full-time and fixed-term for two years in the first instance

The Purpose of the Post

As Clinical Research Fellow, you will undertake research projects and training in heart failure and sleep disordered breathing.

The key research project will relate to mapping the pathway of care for cardiac patients with sleep disordered breathing, identifying barriers and interface issues, and potential strategies to overcome these. You will collect original data, and also analyse data previously collected. The work will most likely involve both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and will require travel to other NHS centres to collect data. In addition, you will assist in the follow up of a small number of patients in an international multi-centre randomised controlled trial of adaptive servo-ventilation:The SERVE- HF study.

This post is funded by a Fellowship from ResMed Inc.

You will be responsible for the daily running of the research projects at the Royal Brompton Hospital, with support from a full-time Research Nurse. Other smaller projects will also be undertaken in this clinical topic to facilitate registration for a higher degree, namely an MD (Res).

Key Responsibilities

 To manage and conduct all aspects of the research projects set out in clinical study protocols  To assist in development of research protocols, ethics applications and necessary Imperial College and NHS approvals  To ensure clinical studies are conducted to relevant international governance standards  To develop aims and objectives for a higher degree, to register and successfully complete  To record, analyse and communicate scientific data together with a clear interpretation of results  To write scientific papers communicating the results of the work, and to present at scientific meetings nationally and internationally, where appropriate  To participate in clinical service of the department if required (limited to 1 regular session per week)  To contribute to teaching on ad-hoc basis externally and internally  To develop relevant research and clinical skills  To join multidisciplinary meetings and participate in clinical governance activities and audit  To participate in departmental managerial activities as required

 You will be appointed to an honorary contract with the Royal Brompton Hospital

Qualifications:

Essential

 MB BS or equivalent, preferably with intercalated BSc  MRCP

Knowledge and Experience:

Essential

 Clinical cardiology experience at least at SHO level  At least basic knowledge of general research techniques  At least basic knowledge of cardiac and respiratory physiology
