Part-Time PA Friday & Saturday (Approx. 10 Hours)

Ref. DP/002/01.18 JOB DESCRIPTION

Part-time PA Friday & Saturday (approx. 10 hours)

A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF

I am a single disabled man in my 60s living in the Upper Boat/Hawthorn area of Pontypridd, close to the A470 and have employed PAs for many years. I am tetraplegic, having had a spinal injury many years ago. I permanently use a wheelchair in my home and outside. I employ personal assistants, working for me at different times, providing me with a variety of support and personal care in the day and at night-time. Amongst my interests are watching sport, reading, keeping my small garden looking good, languages, history, going out for a meal, listening to music, local sightseeing whilst out and about.

PURPOSE OF JOB

This job is around providing me with the support and assistance that I need to look after myself and my home and garden. Sometimes I might ask my personal assistant to go shopping with me or some other activity that I need to do on a Friday or Saturday. If I found somebody who would undertake light gardening tasks this would be ideal. Employing personal assistants provides me with some independence to do these things. The job will certainly involve driving my van, assisting me to transfer, accompanying me outside the home but also undertaking some chores in my home, Most of my personal care might be provided by other personal assistants, as above, but any past experience of an applicant of providing personal care would be desirable, even if a positive and helpful manner is the most important thing.

PAY & HOURS OF WORK

These are approximate hours and might be negotiable Friday, 12.00pm - 5.00pm - £8.60 per hour Saturday, 12.00pm - 5.00pm. - £9.60 per hour

Though a part-time job, this will be a proper job requiring a National Insurance number to be submitted. A trial period will be necessary in the first instance. The wage will be paid fortnightly and appropriate holiday pay given.

FLEXIBILITY 1 Though outlined as 10 hours per week, I am flexible to some degree about the number of hours, as well start/finish times. I require somebody who is equally flexible if, at times, the activity or task extends beyond set times. As I employ other personal assistants through the week, I would welcome an applicant for this job who might be able to occasionally cover other personal assistants at other times in the week, e.g. due to unavoidable things like holidays or sickness. I have 4 personal assistants already who cover other nights from Sunday to Saturday morning, and occasionally work extra hours as overtime.

TASKS INVOLVED This list gives you an idea of the type of work involved.

Domestic  Tidying rooms as appropriate when you arrive, perhaps preparing a snack, tea, etc if required, possible meal preparation.  As needed, household cleaning, laundry, ironing, linen changes and other tasks  Assisting me with outside tasks around the house such as light gardening

External activities  Driving me in my van, or car transfers and accompanying me in the car  Going shopping for me at times and with me at times  Trips out to events, places of interest and day trips

Personal care Whilst this job is not strictly about regular personal care, I am looking for a personal assistant who is capable and willing to support me with any occasional difficulties. These might be:  Assisting me with transfer from wheelchair to bed, or vice versa  Undressing/dressing, personal care, associated assistance  Continence management, showering or bathing, as necessary

TYPE OF PERSON REQUIRED

A person who:  would feel comfortable and relaxed working in my home  would be confident and careful driving my vehicle  adapts well to any assistance required with my wheelchair  would enjoy going out externally with me to events, activities, sightseeing, etc  respects the privacy and confidentiality of working in someone else’s home  finds the regular times in this part-time job suitable to their lifestyle 2  is dependable, communicates well and arrives on time  is friendly and has an easy-going manner  has a positive commitment to this kind of work  could provide extra hours on occasions (this would be an advantage)  is flexible and willing to help with other reasonable tasks which might turn up  will fit easily into the routines of my home life  understands personal care needs and is capable of carrying out the tasks required

PERSONAL CARE TASKS

As a tetraplegic I have very poor grip and I am unable to manipulate things easily, therefore I rely on my personal assistants to undertake personal care tasks of an intimate nature. Experience would be valuable but instruction can be given to someone unfamiliar but willing to take on these tasks and responsibilities. A personal assistant’s confidence is quickly developed by co-operation, respect on both parts and willingness to learn and help.
