Why do I want to serve on the ARMA Board? ARMA International has been a major influence in helping me achieve my professional goals. Giving back by being involved at the chapter, region, and association level has always been part of my professional philosophy. As a Director, I would help the association continue to define its vision for Information Governance and its critical leadership role in the Information Management field.

Why I meet the listed qualifications. I have been an active member of ARMA since 2001, serving on the Chapter level as a President-Elect, President and Chairman of the Board of the Mile High Denver Chapter. I have also served on the Region level as a Treasurer, Region Coordinator, and am currently the Region Director for the Midwest Rocky Mountain Region. I am also part of an ARMA Task Force for reviewing the Region/Chapter Restructuring. I hold 4 certifications including the Certified Records Manager (CRM), Information Governance Professional (IGP), Certified Information Professional (CIP), and Certified E-Discovery Specialist (CEDS).

Contributions I can bring to the board. I have a wealth of experience working in, and with, the chapters across my region. I have had many discussions with members and chapter leaders about the direction they would like ARMA to go, what they want, and what they expect out of the association.

RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS POSED TO DIRECTOR CANDIDATES:

What strategic steps should ARMA take to support our profession’s place in the broader world of Information Governance?

ARMA has done a good job of redefining itself over the last few years as a leader in the Information Governance field, while still maintaining that records and information management (RIM) is a core component of Information Governance. I believe we should continue to be proactive in reaching out to other associations and foster relationships to create a common core of understanding about what Information Governance is (or is not).

I also think that we need to continue to work with colleges and universities to develop or expand courses in information governance that will reach a new generation of Information Managers.

What roles have you had (either in business or in a volunteer capacity) that you would characterize as a governance rather than management role?

I view governance as a strategic role, setting the vision, goals making higher level decisions, and making sure the organization (either the business or association) is moving in the right direction. Management is more about structuring the work to support the governance decisions. I have been involved as a volunteer on boards in a director capacity. In the business world, I have been involved in strategic planning (governance) for my department and on inter-department projects. Boards must be able to listen to different points of view and make decisions that will promote the best outcomes for the association. What top two issues do you feel ARMA should focus on the most in the next 12 months and why?

First would be to develop a strategy for reaching out to and developing our next generation of Information Governance professionals. There are many opportunities for growth and they bring energy and a fresh perspective on how information is created, gathered, and used. I believe they will have a major impact on our association going forward.

The second issue would be strengthening our relationship with current and potential members. Members need to be able to experience and promote a real value of belonging to our association. I have had many people tell me that their companies are no longer paying for the membership fees because they don’t see how important it is for someone to belong to ARMA. We need to be able to articulate our relevance at a personal level.
