Tuesday, January 20, 2015: “Inappropriate Student Behavior at School- Does not mean Your Child will not be Educated while on Suspension/Removal” Join the VDOE (Virginia Department of Education) as this workshop will focus on the procedural requirements for addressing inappropriate behavior of a student with a disability, we will discuss the manifestation determination review (MDR) process and the rights parents have during that process. Most importantly we will discuss what educational opportunities must be provided to a student with a disability who has been suspended/removed from school.

Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015: “Early Intervention Services & Childhood Development” New diagnosis? Join Sydney Mroweic, Director of Peninsula School for Autism, as she shares valuable information regarding childhood development and early intervention services. **Please note this workshop is held the last Tuesday of the month.**

Tuesday, March 17, 2015: The workshop for this evening will feature two parts. 6:30-9:00pm “Improving Student Outcomes- The IEP Process Is Critical” 6:30-8:15pm Join VDOE (Virginia Department of Education) as their workshop will focus on the procedural requirements for developing an IEP for a student with disabilities and the rights the parents have during that process. We will also discuss how a parent can respond when the school division IEP team members say NO to a parental proposal for IEP services, etc. Back to School & Summer Fun Vendor Fair 8:15-9:00pm This will be a one stop shop vendor fair! Tuesday, April 21, 2015: “Bullying: How to Recognize It and the Impact it has on Student Performance” Join VDOE (Virginia Department of Education) as their workshop will focus on how parents can recognize the signs that their child may be a target of bullying behavior or that they themselves are engaging in such behaviors. We will also discuss the school division’s obligations in response to alleged bullying activity against any student, with special insight related to students with disabilities.

Tuesday, May 19, 2015: “Service Facilitation for Consumer Directed Medicaid Waivers” Join Leslie Hundley from Toddlers to Grandparents as we explore what a service facilitator is and how they can help you and your family through the complicated maze of Consumer Directed Medicaid Waivers. Let them share the information and knowledge they have absorbed to help you and loved one through this challenging path.

She will provide us with a comprehensive overview of Applied Behavior Analysis: What is ABA?, How can ABA helped my child?, How to identify a quality provider and what services should I expect from my ABA provider, and how to access ABA services.

Tuesday, September 15, 2015: “The Food/Behavior Link: A look at the Feingold Program” Please join Jane Hersey, National Director of the Feingold Association of the United States as she presents information on the Feingold diet. We will explore if certain foods/additives are triggering target symptoms that may create behavior or cognition problems.

Friday, October 30, 2015: “Superhero Throwdown: Halloween Party! (Dress up as your favorite superhero)” Join us for a night of superpowers and Halloween fun! This is a Community Adventures event for the WHOLE family. We will offer Trick or Treating, snacks, crafts, and games for this celebration! Costumes are not required, but welcome!!!! Bring the WHOLE family & join us for a night of fun! No scary costumes, please.

Join the American Heart Association and the Essential Pieces crew as we give thanks for an abundant year with Essential Pieces.
