Overview:

The ‘basic’ school curriculum includes the ‘national curriculum`, as well as `religious education`. The school curriculum is organized into blocks of years called ‘key stages’ (KS). At the end of each key stage, your child’s teacher will formally assess their performance to measure your child’s progress. The school will report your child’s progress to you. This can happen in different ways, e.g. an end-of-term report or meetings at the school. Key Stage 0 Ages 3-5 Early Years Key Stage 1 Ages 5-7 Year 1, and 2 Key Stage 2 Ages 7-10 Year 3, 4 and 5 Key Stage 3 Ages 10-13 Year 6, 7 and 8

Curriculum subjects are:

 English

 Mathematics

 Science

 Design and Technology

 History

 Geography

 Art and Design

 Physical Education (PE)

 Computing  Ancient and Modern Foreign Languages (at key stage 2) Schools will provide religious education (RE) but parents can ask for their children to be taken out of the whole lesson or part of it. Schools will often also teach:

 personal, social and health education (PSHE)

 modern foreign languages (at key stage 1) Curriculum for EYFS:

Early Years Foundation Stage [EYFS]:

Our curriculum offers comprehensive Islamic education for Primary school aged children delivered by knowledgeable and skilled professionals. Our approach to Islamic Studies covers all relevant topics:  Aqaaid (belief/creed)  Suwarul-Qur'an (memorizing surahs of the Qur'an and learning the meanings)  Seerah (History, biographical studies)  Ibaadah (Worship)  Akhlaaq/Mu'asharaat (Manners, Character building and Social Ethics)  Duas (Supplications and Islamic expressions)  Qisasul-Ambiya (Stories of the Prophets)  Arabic Language  Tajweed (Art of Qur'anic recitation)

Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfill their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up. Children in the [EYFS] learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. We aim to develop and broaden the range of children’s learning experiences, to leave them confident, eager and enthusiastic learners who are looking forward to school. We hope to play our part by treating your child as an individual and offering him/her a variety of experiences and activities which are designed to further their development process.

Staff at IFES plan activities and experiences that promote children’s development and learning based on the ‘Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage [EYFS] in the following key aspects:

Area of Learning and Development: Aspect:

Prime Areas: Personal, Social and Emotional Development Self-confidence and Self-awareness Making Relationships Managing Feelings & Behavior Physical Development Moving and handling Health and self-care

Communication and Language Listening and Attention Understanding

Specific Areas:

Literacy Reading Writing

Mathematics Numbers Shape, Space and Measure

Understanding the World People and Communities The world Technology Expressive Arts and Design Exploring and using media and materials Being Imaginative

These ‘7’ areas are used to plan your child’s learning and activities. The professionals teaching and supporting your child will make sure that the activities are suited to your child’s unique needs. This is a little bit like a curriculum in primary and secondary schools, but it’s suitable for very young children, and it’s designed to be really flexible so that staff can follow your child’s unique needs and interests. Personal, Social and Emotional Development:

In our pre nursery, Nursery and Reception Classes Personal, Social and Emotional Development involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behavior in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities. Children will learn in the following ways: through the process of sensorial and EPL exercises, indoor and outdoor activities.

Physical Development:

 Children move confidently and imaginatively with increasing control and co- ordination and an awareness of space and others.  They use a range of small and large equipment and balancing and climbing apparatus, with increasing skills.  They handle appropriate tools, objects, construction and malleable materials safely, with increasing control.

Communication, Language &Literacy (English, Urdu): Help the child develop the language skills which are listening, speaking, reading and writing. First through the sand paper letters, the child learns both the sounds and shapes of the letters. Then he listens for the sounds in words and begins to build them using the Montessori movable alphabet. The phonic approach is used in the Montessori Method. The child is taught to read after careful preparation and when he shows he is ready, he succeeds and finds reading an enjoyable activity. Furthermore, while the child is absorbing his own language in the Montessori Method, he is exposed to games and activities which introduce him to the correct use of grammar. This approach helps lay sound foundation for the future.

Mathematics: Montessori Mathematics materials enable even a very young child to achieve a natural appreciation of mathematical concepts through his or her own efforts. This avoids the mental blocks which so often occur in children faced with purely abstract concepts. Specially designed equipment helps children to grasp concrete ideas along with the sensory experience of numbers, quantities and mathematical operations. Gradually children can move confidently to complete abstract mathematical problems

Understanding the World:

 To learn about ‘the world around us’, students are taken on monthly educational excursions to places of  Public or social importance to see and learn about those places and their activities.  As the students interact with different kinds of people and authorities as well as see different places and  Activities, their confidence, clarity and understanding of reality are enhanced.  While being educated by practically visiting important locations like the Airport, a Fire Brigade station, an  Aquarium, etc. the students also tend to enjoy these recreations.  Field visits to companies or organizations for on-hands experience or real life observation are organized to enhance the practical grasping of students.

Expressive Arts & Design:

 Children explore sound and colour, texture, shape, form and space in two and three dimensions.  They respond in a variety of ways to what they see, hear, smell, touch and feel.  Through art, music, stories and imaginative play, they show an increasing ability to use their imagination, to listen and to observe.  They use a widening range of materials, suitable tools, instruments and other resources to express ideas and to communicate their feelings.
