Ethical Reasoning Prewriting

People afraid of offending often share the maxim, “Do not to judge” while others judge relentlessly from a position of profound ignorance.

Nothing is wrong with informed judgment. It is a consequence of reason and frequently valid. On the other hand, oversimplifying causes a breakdown of logic which leads to fallacies like hasty generalizations or stereotyping.

Judgment is a type of assertion, an opinion based on values, beliefs, or philosophical concepts; furthermore, the judgment must be based on non-personal criteria. In other words, this type of opinion has its foundation in such things as natural law, positive or statutory law, history, religion, or philosophy.

Assignment: This is a prewriting exercise focusing on the reasoning that leads to moral and ethical judgment. Use sources like those listed at the end of the above paragraph. Break this assignment into three sections. Use the following working outline and write two to three well developed paragraphs for each of the three required areas of research:

I) Explanation of Moral/Ethical Issue: Explain moral/ethical issue clearly and comprehensively.

II) Evaluation of Evidence: Evaluate evidence from sources, question assumptions, and as necessary, develop refutation. Illustrate conclusions and consequences with relevant information that leads to informed judgment.

III) Thesis: Include thesis (judgment/opinion) that reflects complexities of the issue, for example, different ethical perspectives or concepts, while at the same time takes a clear position.

 Explain issue clearly and comprehensively, illustrating conclusions and consequences with relevant information that leads to informed judgment.

 Include thesis (judgment/opinion) that reflects complexities of the issue, for example, different ethical perspectives or concepts, while at the same time takes a clear position.
