DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM DES 1200C DENTAL RADIOLOGY
Course Description: (Credit hours 2: 2 class hours and 3 laboratory hours per week). Corequisites: DEH 1002C and DES 1010. This course is designed to introduce the student to the fundamental background and theory necessary for safe and effective use of radiographs in dentistry. It includes the history of radiology, production and uses of radiation, dental x-ray films and their uses, exposure techniques, mounting techniques, interpretation of radiographs and radiation safety. Additional special fees are required. (Fall)
Performance Standards:
Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Discuss the history of radiology. 2. Discuss the function of the x-ray machine and the production of radiation. 3. Discuss the principles of radiation biology and safety. 4. Discuss and practice radiation safety and protection in dental radiography. 5. Discuss the types, purpose and content of typical intraoral and extraoral dental radiographs films. 6. Compare and contrast the fundamentals of the paralleling technique and the bisecting angle technique. 7. Describe darkroom solutions and their proper use in processing dental films. 8. Explain the purpose of and use radiographic infection control measures. 9. Discuss various special projections that are utilized in dentistry including panoramic radiographs. 10. Identify and discuss characteristic radiographic anatomical landmarks including caries, periodontal disease, tooth structures and periapical pathology. 11. Identify and discuss radiographic pitfalls and explain their causes and corrections. 12. Correctly orient, mount and label finished radiographs. 13. Describe the principles and procedures used in the duplication of radiographs. 14. Discuss the various legal aspects of dental radiography.
