Prayer: Ben Born Not too long ago, I heard a story about a king who had a close friend with whom he had grown up. This friend had a habit of looking at every situation that ever occurred in his life, whether positive or negative, and remarking, "This is good!"

One day the king and his friend were out on a hunting expedition, and the friend's job was to load and prepare the guns for the king to fire. Unfortunately, he did something wrong in preparing one of the weapons because, after the king took it, it misfired and the king's thumb was blown off!

Examining the situation, the friend remarked with his usual, "This is good!" to which the king swiftly replied, "No, this is not good!" And he proceeded to send his friend to jail.

About a year later, the king was hunting in an area that he should have known better than to venture into because the area was full of cannibals. Sure enough, the cannibals captured him and took him to their village. They tied him up, stacked some wood, and set up a stake so they could begin the barbeque.

As they came near to set fire to the wood, however, they noticed that the king was missing a thumb. Being superstitious, this tribe never ate anyone who was less than whole, so they hastily untied the king and sent him on his way. Upon returning home, the grateful king was reminded of the event that had taken his thumb and felt remorse for his treatment of his friend. He went immediately to the jail to speak with him.

"You were right," the king said, "it was good that my thumb was blown off." He proceeded to tell his friend all that had just happened. "And so I am very sorry for sending you to jail for so long. It was bad for me to do this." "No!" his friend replied, "This is good!" "What do you mean, 'This is good?' How could it be good that I sent my friend to jail for a year?" "If I had NOT been in jail", the friend exclaimed, "I would have been with you!"

When we go through difficult times, when we are standing on the edge of what appears to be sure defeat, or when things happen that throw off our plans...the last thing on our minds may be, "This is good!” Yet Romans 8:28 says "we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Although the Bible doesn't tell us that all things will be good, we do have the assurance that God can make all things work for our good and His glory...even those things that on the surface do not appear to be good at the time. The simple message: God loves us and is in control. Our circumstances may not always seem good, but our God is always good. ~ Submitted
