Summary: The European Union Center of Excellence at the Center for West European Studies (CWES) promotes knowledge of the European Union, including its institutions and policies, to further the EU-U.S. relationship and to establish an EU presence in the U.S.

The EU Center is a member of a Network of European Union Centers (NEUC). The European Union approved funding to support this Network of European Union Centers in the United States to:

 Further the goals of the New Transatlantic Agenda through enhanced ‘People-to-People Links' among the citizens of the European Union and the United States;  Promote greater understanding in the US of the EU as an evolving system of governance and as an international actor; and  Increase awareness in the United States about the political, economic and cultural importance of the Transatlantic relationship, especially the increasing scope of EU-US relations.

The intellectual philosophy of the EUC recognizes that both integration and diversity shape contemporary Europe. Western Europe is moving toward greater political and economic integration while maintaining its diverse cultural and historical traditions. This perspective underlies the international reputation that the University has developed in the field of European Union Studies since 1984.

Indiana (no website available. All information has been lifted from their WEST site and an article about IUB’s selection as an EU Center)

**Official Name: **Website address: http://www.indiana.edu/~west/ (for ces, not euce)

IU’s selection as an EU Center of Excellence is consistent with its historic emphasis on international studies. The Bloomington campus is home to broad disciplinary expertise in European studies and specializes in the teaching of more than 20 EU languages, including several which are less commonly offered by American universities.

IU Bloomington recognizes the growing global importance of the EU with a series of initiatives, ranging from new degree programs such as an undergraduate major and minor in EU studies to research initiatives and conferences.

The mission of the new center housed in Ballantine Hall will be to train future generations of scholars and professionals in advanced, interdisciplinary EU studies on such issues as membership enlargement, trans-Atlantic understanding of legal and medical issues, and policies on immigration, education and the agro-environment.

It will emphasize competency in the least commonly taught languages of the EU member and candidate countries, support activities of a core group of IU faculty and their doctoral and master’s- level students engaged in EU studies and research, and furnish accurate and timely information about the EU to K-12 teachers, post-secondary faculty, government officials, businesses and other civil society groups.

University of Washington-Seattle Official name: EU Center of Excellence of Seattle Website address: http://jsis.washington.edu/euc/

The EU Center of Excellence of Seattle is one of the ten original EU Centers funded by the European Commission beginning in 1998. The network of EU Centers promotes the study of the EU, its institutions and policies and EU- US relations through teaching programs, scholarly research and outreach activities. The European Union funds this initiative as part of a broader effort to promote the people-to-people ties outlined in the New Transatlantic Agenda, which provides a framework for EU-US relations. In 2005, the European Commission Delegation announced ten universities to host European Union Centers of Excellence. This is the third cycle (2005-2008) of the EU Centers program that was launched in 1998. The EU Centers program has helped create a foothold for EU studies in US higher education and served as an information resource for a broad US audience, with extensive outreach to regional audiences and the policy community. The recipients of awards in this cycle have been designated "Centers of Excellence" in recognition of the high quality, variety and depth of their programming. Contact: Mailing Address:
