JOB DESCRIPTION Associate/Deputy Director of Development

The San Francisco Zoo connects people with wildlife, inspires caring for nature and advances conservation action.

Department: Development Reports To: Vice President of Philanthropy FLSA Status: Exempt

SUMMARY: Plans, organizes, and directs a comprehensive annual fundraising program which includes the execution of the following programs personally, through the management of support staff, or through volunteer committees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Designs and implements a strategic annual giving plan for the Zoo. Plan includes a direct mail effort that will build on Zoo’s membership program. Establishes and meets quantifiable and qualitative objectives and goals. Ensures timely completion of all solicitation and acknowledgements responsibilities.

2. Oversee Zoo’s $1,000 Guardian level annual donors. Develops strategies to increase number of Guardian level donors and maintain steady level of renewals. Build and manage timely, accurate and engaging renewal and retention program. Designs and implements recognition events and activities for current and potential donors.

3. Under VP of Philanthropy’s guidance and through volunteer leadership, manages and coordinates all details involved with annual Zoofest fundraiser and other fundraising events. Including working closely with a volunteer committee on the following details: sponsorship, invitation design and process, event design and management, publicity and marketing, building live and silent auction, seating arrangements, day of logistics, catering, acknowledgement and recognition and budget responsibilities.

4. For special events, works collaboratively with and in support of volunteer committees, development and other department staff;

5. Develop and maintain a strategic plan to upgrade Guardian level donors. Plan to include, but not limited to face-to-face visits, phone calls, and written proposals.

6. Collaborate and work with the Deputy Director of Corporate memberships on identifying and cultivating donors whose giving intersects between individual and corporate support.

8-10 1 Assoc/Deputy Director of Development 7. Develop and monitors budgets and timelines for events and appeals. Assists in strategizing and writing annual plan for the advancement program. Integrates all fundraising initiatives so that they realize healthy income to expense ratio. 8. Oversees grant funding calendar (submittal, reports and acknowledgements) from private and individual foundations. Writes and prepares proposals for submittal. Manages part time grant writer.

9. Maintains accurate donor gift and contact records utilizing Raiser’s Edge database. Generate regular reports to monitor and assess progress toward fundraising goals.

10. Ensures the timely completion of donor requests for VIP tours, program information, donor reports, and other special requests.

11. Must be a highly energetic professional with a track record of building donor relationships, soliciting for gifts and comfortable working with multiple projects simultaneously. 12. Oversees grant funding calendar (submittal, reports and acknowledgements) from private and individual foundations. Writes and prepares proposals for submittal. Manages part time grant writer. 13. Actively supports VP of Philanthropy with identifying and cultivating individual donors, foundations in support of general operations, current programming and capital needs. 14. Ensures all donor acknowledgement and stewardship activities are timely, appropriate and in legal compliance. 15. Interacts with Zoo visitors courteously and offers proper attention at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Six or more years of progressively responsible fundraising or comparable experience.

2. Two years success managing a successful annual giving program.

3. Successful track record of designing and building a greater and broader donor base.

4. Ability to develop and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies for higher level annual donors, as well as the ability to establish measurable goals and to achieve them.

5. Strong communication (oral, written, presentation) and organizational skills.

6. Skills in numerical analysis, forecasting and spreadsheets.

7. Ability to work effectively with volunteers.

8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

9. Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects.

10. Proficiency with MS Office, information systems and prospect databases, preferably Raisers Edge.

11. Valid California driver's license with a good insurable driving record, regular access to a vehicle, and appropriate insurance.

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university.
