Smith and Leach 10 Document Path: l:\council\bills\nbd\12564ac06.doc 11 12 Introduced in the House on May 17, 2006 13 Adopted by the House on May 17, 2006 14 15 Summary: Langston Charter Middle School 16 17 18 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 19 20 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 21 5/17/2006 House Introduced and adopted HJ-102 22 23 24 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 25 26 5/17/2006 27 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE STUDENTS OF 12 LANGSTON CHARTER MIDDLE SCHOOL IN GREENVILLE 13 FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN THE 14 C-SPAN STUDENTCAM COMPETITION AND TO WISH 15 THEM THE BEST IN ALL THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS. 16 17 Whereas, the bright, inquisitive students of Langston Charter 18 Middle School in Greenville all participated in the C-Span 19 StudentCam Competition, researching topics of local importance 20 and integrating their research with national reporting produced by 21 C-Span; and 22 23 Whereas, the middle schoolers interviewed both local and national 24 figures in South Carolina to compile their information and then 25 produced ten minute documentary films; and 26 27 Whereas, participation in this competition was a rewarding 28 learning experience and Langston Charter Middle School students 29 brought great pride to their families, school, and South Carolina by 30 taking home several national awards for their informative and 31 thought-provoking documentaries, portions of which have aired 32 nationwide on C-Span; and 33 34 Whereas, sixth graders Caitlyn Foster and Rachel Ferrell won the 35 third place award for their documentary entitled “Is Your Child 36 Safe on the School Bus?”, while Bryce Johnson, Nicholas Caffrey, 37 and Ryan Smith, also sixth graders, won another third place award 38 for their documentary entitled “Water Pollution”. Each team split 39 a five hundred dollar cash prize and was interviewed on the air by 40 C-Span commentators; and 41

1 [5171] 1 1 Whereas, Langston Middle School students also took home three 2 honorable mention awards. Colin Bush earned one for his film 3 entitled “Saving Our Trees for the Future”. Seventh graders 4 Nathan Jones, Nathaniel Chaisson, and Christopher Abel proudly 5 received one for “Violence in Video Games”; and seventh graders 6 Marissa Cox and Cassie Doiron took home honors for “What 7 About Right Here?”; and 8 9 Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pride in 10 honoring the young people who participated in this worthwhile 11 competition and encourages all South Carolina youth to take an 12 active role in learning about current events occurring both in our 13 State and around the world. Now, therefore, 14 15 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 16 17 That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of 18 South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor the 19 students of Langston Charter Middle School for their outstanding 20 performance in the C-Span StudentCam Competition and wish 21 them the best in all their future endeavors. 22 23 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 24 Greg Abel, Principal of Langston Charter Middle School. 25 ----XX---- 26
