MEMORANDUM TO: NTFL Clubs

CC: AFLNT Staff

FROM: Mark Noonan, State Umpiring Manager DATE: 9th October 2017

SUBJECT: “Community Umpiring Round 2 of the 2017-18 NTFL Season”

This weekend is “Community Umpiring Round 2 of the 2017-18 NTFL Season” and we need everyone’s help to create a positive match day environment to help “Umpiring recruit new umpires, but also assist in the retention of umpires to keep them in the game. This is achievable by everyone involved to have a positive attitude towards umpires and umpiring.

The national campaign “Umpiring Is Everyone’s Business” (UIEB) is to support umpires at the community level of the game and emphasises that all involved - coaches, players, administrators, parents and supporters – have a role to play in creating a positive match day environment considering that 40% of NTFL umpires are under the age of 18.

One in every 4 community umpires nationally leave the game each year due to the abuse and intimidation of umpires from coaches, players and spectators. Majority of these umpires are in their first two seasons of their umpiring careers.

The AFL, AFL Coaches Association, AFL Players Association and AFL Umpires Department band together to the drive the message to the Greater Football Community, we hope your club can join in the National Campaign.

We would like to continue implementing some of the National UIEB initiatives to help improve better player/umpire and coach/umpire relationship. AFL NT asks that if Coaches and captains can come together at the centre circle at the coin toss to shake hands and show a stand the “umpiring is everyone business”.

I look forward to discussing umpiring with you all in due course and wish all teams the best for the 2017/18 TIO NTFL season.
