Business Meeting Agenda Item Introduction of PTO officers, 2013 Budget, Event Coordination Welcome/Call to Order Carrie Schofield-Broadbent called the meeting to order. Event Updates  Jennifer Kelley provided meeting place and time for Westcott Fair  Kristin Baker provided information about the Festival of Races; 5k or 3k Fun run and community walk. Meet at Manley Field house, Ed Smith Sign at 10:30. Spirit Headbands provided for participants  Principal Barber explained Ed Smith’s role in the Ride for Missing Children. Bike route will pass Ed Smith at 9:30 on Sept 27th. Entire school will participate from Ed Smith front lawn. Family members welcome. Ed Smith will receive three assemblies about child safety for pariticpation. Initiatives Report  Jasmine Pryor reported that playground work is put on hold till October.  Franchesca Clemente reported on Middle School Task Force. Welcome breakfast was successful and well attended. Request for volunteers to assist facilitate communication between parents, students, and staff. Next meeting in October. Principal’s Report  New Eno boards are promoting engagement between students and teachers.  Student testing scores are average. Top scores in ELA and third in district for math. Individual student scores are sent from the district. Teachers will have data for Open House.  Open House: Elementary 9/24, Middle School 9/26 both from 6-8pm.  After school program (Say Yes) has a new director who is fully certified with years of experience. Partnering with Westcott Community Center to fill positions. District will fund 6 certified teachers. Program will have an art and technology focus. Middle school after school program is being designed to mimic elementary tutoring program.  Mini academies will be provided to support higher need students. Virginia Feldman is working with the school. Need more volunteers.  PBIS initiative for middle school uses a point card to help students and teachers create a positive learning environment. Students must have all areas of their card stamped to be considered complete. Earn back features to encourage student participation. Incentives will align with Ed Smith Gear. Popular fashion show premiered the new Ed Smith Gear.  Mr. Barber thanked the PTO for their help in the purchase of Ed Smith Gear.  School Improvement Plan not scored as high as hoped (parent involvement scored a 3 and school plan scored a 2). Vision: Ed Smith will be the most improved school in the district. PTO Big Project  Support Principal Barber to reach goals of school improvement plan. Treasurer’s Report  Motion created by John Ashby and seconded by Christie Ashby to discuss budget details at next meeting. Funding Requests  $250 for Inclusion committee childcare approved by motion initiated by Tracy Carrick and seconded by Jed Kissane and Stephanie Fay.  Up to $300 to be used for purchase of Ed Smith Headbands for Festival of Races motioned by Brenda Greenfield and seconded by Missy Giardine  Motion to delay approval of $500 for artist collaboration on Ed Smith Gear by Tulah Goenka, seconded by Brigit Burt  $125 approved for Middle School Task force to purchase food, motioned by Missy Giardine, seconded by Kristin Baker. General Announcements  Lunchroom reading program needs a new volunteer  Grade Rep program being spearheaded by Melissa Hyman. Looking for volunteers to communicate with teachers, parents, and report to PTO.  Fundraising: no entertainment book sales, promote pictures as fundraiser, need a sub committee for fundraiser.  Howler requests pictures and summaries of events people attend in the community. Howler would like to become a parade of awesomeness.  Beautification projects for school will be discussed at next meeting  Title 1 money is designated for school use, not a PTO concern.
