REFLECTIONS FROM THE PASTOR
We are about to enter into the season of Thanksgiving (remember Thanksgiving? That’s the time between the mega holidays of Halloween and Christmas.) We take time now to give thanks to God for all the blessings. Soon we will gather for a feast and a giant nap. But before we do that, I’m hoping that each of us can take a few minutes each day to name our blessings and to thank God for them. If nothing else, try this simple prayer as the day comes to a close: “Thank you God for ______” Then, fill in the blank. Naming our blessings and giving thanks to God can really change our attitudes towards life. Gratitude is a great way of living. I bring this up now, not just because turkeys are running scared across the US, but because I think that many times we have forgotten to be thankful. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, maybe it’s because of the death of my dad, but I try not to take life for granted. Oh, I could focus on the negative - my body aches more than before, when I was a kid we had to walk 5 miles through the snow uphill…both ways!...just to get to school – sort of thing, but that isn’t really helpful. Instead, I give thanks to God every morning when I open my eyes and I don’t see the inside of a box. I’m not quite at the point of my mom who tells me that she doesn’t buy green bananas anymore, but I give thanks for my health (even though it’s not perfect). I give thanks to God that my dogs love me unconditionally. I give thanks to God that I have food in my cupboard, that I have a home in which to live, that I have a vehicle to drive, that you continue to call me as your pastor. I give thanks to God that I have good friends, that there are high school kids who snapchat me every morning just to say “Good Morning”. I give thanks to God that once again nature with all its droughts, fires, snowstorms, hurricanes, and earthquakes, has not defeated us. I give thanks to God for the beauty of creation. I give thanks to God for family and friends, turkeys that run scared, pumpkins that turn into pies, and good friends that gather around the table to help celebrate by giving thanks. “Thank you God for______” is a never ending prayer. Try it and see what a difference it makes in life.
