Minutes Polk County LEPC October 9, 2012 2:00 p.m. Polk County Emergency Management 1907 Carpenter Avenue Des Moines, Iowa

In Attendance: Rob Chiappano, Michael Gezel, Cameron Stufflebeam, Cheryl Meir, Joe Solem, Troy Hugen, Rex Mundt, Peggy Reelitz

1. Meeting was called to order at 2:01 p.m. We have a new member, Joe Solem, retired from EFCO and is currently volunteering with various organizations in the Metro Area. Welcome Joe!!!

2. Rex Mundt moved to approve May minutes. Rob Chiappano 2nd Unanimously carried

3. Airport Exercise was conducted on August 4, 2012. Along with the scheduled activities of the exercise, Mother Nature added a twist by sending a storm through the area. The After Action Report is attached for your review.

4. Monsanto in Ankeny had an incident at their facility in which a container exploded. A valuable lesson learned was that employees who were exposed to the chemical were not identified during the first interview. They didn’t think to tell responders that they had walked through the chemical and had it on their shoes.

5. Helena has a new facility in Ankeny.

6. Rex Mundt moved to adjourn Michael Gezel 2nd Unanimously carried Adjourned at 2:30

Discussion: There was discussion held after the meeting adjourned about how to move this LEPC forward. This is a discussion we have held many times with no action being taken. There is a group of Safety Managers in Ankeny who get together periodically and it might be worthwhile to contact them to present at an upcoming meeting. There is also the Iowa Contingency Planners and the Association of Business & Industries that we should contact to present at an upcoming meeting. AJ developed a power point presentation LEPC 101 that he presented at the Hazmat Symposium a couple years ago that would be a tool we could use. Peggy will do some research and contacts to see when/if we could make a presentation. Any volunteers to help in this effort would be appreciated.
