PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01 INSTALLATION

A. General: Install deck units and accessories in accordance with SDI Publication No. 29, manufacturer's recommendations and final shop drawings, and as specified herein.

B. Place deck units on supporting steel framework and adjust to final position with ends accurately aligned and bearing on supporting members before being permanently fastened. Do not stretch or contract side lap interlocks.

C. Place deck units in straight alignment for entire length of run of cells and with close alignment between cells at ends of abutting units.

D. Place deck units flat and square, and fasten to supporting frame without warp or deflection.

E. Coordinate and cooperate with structural steel erector in locating decking bundles to prevent overloading of structural members.

F. Do not use deck units for storage or working platforms until permanently secured.

G. Use runways or planking for transporting concrete across deck to protect the deck.

METAL DECKING 05 30 00-4 (45307035) ST. VINCENT COLLEGE SIS AND HERMAN DUPRÉ SCIENCE PAVILION H. Fastening Deck Units: Fasten roof deck units to steel supporting members by not less than 3/4 inch diameter puddle welds or elongated welds of equal perimeter, spaced not more than 12 inches o.c. with a minimum of 2 welds per unit at each support. Fasten floor deck units to supports with 5/8" diameter puddle welds or elongated welds of equal perimeter at 12 inch c/c spacing, with a minimum of two welds per deck unit at each support. Provide 3/4" diameter puddle welds at 6" o.c. spacing at perimeter of roof deck, including perimeter of roof deck openings, edges, valleys and etc. Tack weld or use self-tapping No. 8 or larger machine screws.

1. Comply with AWS requirements and procedures for manual shielded metal arc welding, appearance and quality of welds, and methods used in correcting welding work. Use welding washers where recommended by Steel Deck Institute or deck manufacturer.

2. Fasten side laps of adjacent deck units between supports, at intervals not exceeding 24 inches o.c. for floor deck and 12 inches o.c. for roof deck, using self-tapping No. 10 or larger machine screws.

3. Uplift Loading: Install and anchor roof decks to resist gross uplift loading of 30 lbs. per sq.ft.(219.7kg/sq.m) at eave overhang and 20 lbs. per sq.ft.(146.4kg/sq.m) for other roof areas.

I. Cutting and Fitting: Cut and neatly fit deck units and accessories around other work projecting through or adjacent to the decking.

J. Reinforcement at Openings: Provide additional metal reinforcement and closure pieces as required for strength, continuity of decking and support of other work shown. See "Deck Damage and Penetrations" by Richard B. Heagler, P.E., published by the Steel Deck Institute for requirements of strengthening around openings in roof and floor deck. Comply with requirements therein unless noted otherwise.

K. Shear Connectors: Weld shear connectors to supports through decking units in accordance with AWS "Structural Welding Code" and manufacturer's instructions. Do not weld shear connectors through two layers (lapped ends) of decking units. Weld only on clean, dry deck surfaces. Weld to structure by automatic welding process. Do not stick weld.

L. Floor Deck Closures: Weld steel sheet column closures, cell closures, and Z-closures to deck, according to SDI recommendations, to provide tight fitting closures at open ends of ribs and sides of decking. Weld cover plates at changes in direction of floor deck panels, unless noted otherwise.

B. Perform visual inspection of all welds for deck attachment and shear connectors attachment.

1. Inspect 10 percent of welded connections for shear connectors by means of moderate hammer blows as per AWS D1.1.

2. Bend tests will be performed if visual inspections reveal less than a full 360 degree flash or welding repairs to any shear connector stud.

C. The testing laboratory shall submit, on their own letterheads, reports of their inspections to the Architect. Submit test reports in triplicate.

D. Perform additional tests as may be necessary to reconfirm any non-compliance of the original work, and as may be necessary to show compliance of corrected work.
