West Cork

For the second year running, West Cork Arts Centre is collaborating with West Cork Mental Health Services to host an exciting free event suitable for all the family on Sunday 21 June, in the courtyard at Uillinn, commencing at 3pm. Last year’s event, which celebrated the legacy of Pete Seeger attracted many local musicians and this year the organisers are again inviting musicians of all styles and the community to come together and celebrate Skibbereen’s contribution to World Music Day.

All are welcome to join in this global celebration of music making and community. Confirmed acts include, The Happiness Ensemble, Clon Drums, Bantry Community Choir, and traditional music with Ann Coughlan and friends. Liz Clark will perform with The Baltimore Singers and there will also be songs from young people participating in Skibbereen Community & Family Resource Centre Youth Music Projects.

There will be an instrument making workshop with Peter Fitzpatrick, of the Happiness Ensemble where children of 8 years and over, will have the opportunity to make and decorate their own customised didjeridoo! An ‘Open Door’ music session, to which all musicians are welcome to contribute, will conclude the event, so if you play an instrument or sing, come along and play your part on World Music Day 2015. Waterford Waterford Healing Arts Trust presents a fusion of Irish and Indian music in celebration of World Music Day

In celebration of World Music Day, the Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT) is delighted to present a unique fusion of traditional Irish and Indian music and dance as part of its Healing Sounds in the foyer programme.

This event will showcase the music of Casóg, a talented group of young musicians who attend music classes through the auspices of Waterford Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann. These classes are organised by its chairman, Martin Forristal, with students receiving accreditation from the London College of Music. The group play an exciting array of instruments including flutes, fiddles, banjos, accordions and concertinas. They will also perform some Irish dancing.

Sandwiched between music and dance by Casóg will be a performance of Indian dance in traditional dress by Indian adults and children who have made Waterford their home. Given that a number of Indian nurses work within University Hospital Waterford, this is an ideal opportunity for the staff of the hospital to celebrate the colourful culture of their colleagues.

This combined performance of Irish music and Indian dance will take place in the foyer of University Hospital Waterford on Monday 22nd June at 1.30pm. The Healing Sounds in the foyer programme is funded by the Arts Council and sponsored by AIB.
