Hamilton 16 17 18 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 19 20 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 21 6/18/2013 Senate Introduced and adopted ( Senate Journalpage 38) 22 23 24 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 25 26 6/18/2013 27 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A SENATE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO CONGRATULATE WILLIAM P. “BILL” HAMILTON, 12 SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY SPORTS 13 INFORMATION DIRECTOR, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS 14 RETIREMENT, TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS FORTY YEARS 15 OF DEDICATED SERVICE, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH 16 HAPPINESS AND FULFILLMENT IN ALL HIS FUTURE 17 ENDEAVORS. 18 19 Whereas, the South Carolina Senate has learned that William P. 20 “Bill” Hamilton, South Carolina State University sports 21 information director, will soon be retiring from a distinguished 22 career spanning forty years; and 23 24 Whereas, in preparation for his career, Mr. Hamilton earned a 25 bachelor’s degree in English language and literature at South 26 Carolina State University (SCSU) in 1973 and a master’s degree in 27 education from the same institution in 1979. Further studies 28 followed at New York University; and 29 30 Whereas, a Maryland native who grew up in Chesterfield, Bill 31 Hamilton is the only fulltime sports information director in the 32 school’s history. Mr. Hamilton began his career at his alma mater 33 in July 1973, just two months after receiving his undergraduate 34 degree; and 35 36 Whereas, in appreciation of his long and celebrated career, he has 37 earned numerous professional and civic awards, the latest being 38 the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) 39 Lifetime Achievement Award. He also has been the recipient of 40 other CoSIDA awards, among them the Bob Kenworthy 41 Community Service Award (1998) and Trailblazer Award (2005).

[791] 2 1 Other honors include the Herm Helms Media Excellence Award 2 (2012); and 3 4 Whereas, inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 2009, Bill 5 Hamilton is also featured in the MEAC Hall of Fame (2009), 6 SCSU Physical Education Hall of Fame (2011), and SCSU 7 Athletic Hall of Fame (2002); and 8 9 Whereas, in addition, he was selected as a National Association for 10 Equal Opportunity in Higher Education Distinguished Alumnus 11 (2006) and appeared as a Stellar Alumnus on the SCSU National 12 Alumni Association’s 2010 calendar; and 13 14 Whereas, as a member of a number of professional and civic 15 organizations, Mr. Hamilton is actively involved in the sports 16 industry and his community. He is a longtime pollster for the 17 Sheridan Broadcasting Network and the Sports Network and 18 served on the NCAA Final Four Media Coordination Committee 19 from 1999 to 2007. He is the former chairman of the Orangeburg 20 Attention Homes, Inc., a former board member and local chapter 21 president of the Alston Wilkes Society, a current board member of 22 the South Carolina State Employees Association, and president of 23 the Orangeburg Chapter of SCSEA; and 24 25 Whereas, to recognize Bill Hamilton for his four decades of 26 service to SCSU, his colleagues will host a “roast and toast” 27 celebration in his honor on June 28, 2013; and 28 29 Whereas, grateful for the legacy of consistent commitment and 30 excellence Mr. Hamilton has bestowed on this great State, the 31 Senate takes great pleasure in wishing him well as he enters 32 retirement and trusts he will find much enjoyment in the more 33 leisurely pace of the days ahead. Now, therefore, 34 35 Be it resolved by the Senate: 36 37 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 38 congratulate William P. “Bill” Hamilton, South Carolina State 39 University sports information director, upon the occasion of his 40 retirement, commend him for his forty years of dedicated service, 41 and wish him much happiness and fulfillment in all his future 42 endeavors. 43
