Linking Theory to Practice and evaluation

Aim: To relate the work covered on the Energiser training to current research and the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Curriculum Framework for Scotland.

Outcomes

By the end of this activity, participants will:  be aware of the numeracy elements within Adult Literacy and Numeracy Curriculum Framework for Scotland.  be aware of some of the themes within Adult Numeracy: shifting the focus, Research Report and Recommendations for Adult Numeracy in Scotland

Whole group Key principles and current research 40 minutes PPS 43- 50

Adult Literacy and Numeracy Curriculum Framework for Scotland (5 min) Talk about the principles and the numeracy content and encourage participants to make use of.

Adult Numeracy: shifting the focus, report and recommendations for adult numeracy in Scotland Talk about the numeracy definition and ideas for good practice and guiding principles, Appendix 5. Talk through the following concepts: (10 min)  Connectionist Teaching  Formative Assessment  Attention to beliefs, attitudes and emotions  Critical Numeracy

Small groups or pairs Ask the participants to talk through the work carried out on the Energiser and find at least one example of each these four aspects of Numeracy Tuition. (15 min)

Feedback in large group. (5min)

From page 28 & 54 of Shifting the Focus PP 50 & 51 Sum up by talking through and recommending participants to continue to link theory and research to practice by re-reading/reading Diana’s report and referring to the ALN Curriculum.

Evaluation whole group – individually or otherwise 20 minutes PCH1, S1H4, 5 & 7 Go back to S1H4 the wheel and use a different coloured pen to redraw your profile. You may want to refer to the programme PCH1 or anything you have written on S1H5. Complete the evaluation form S1H7 You may want to do this individually or to discuss with your neighbours. You have 20 minutes to complete these two tasks and then we’ll have a short time for any comments.
