Pinnipeds include the walrus Dusignathus sp., cf. D. seftoni, the fur seal Cal- lorhinus sp., cf. C. gilmorei, and indeterminate otariid bones. Baleen whales include dwarf mysticetes (Herpetocetus bramblei Whitmore & Barnes, 2008, Herpetocetus sp.), two right whales (cf. Eubalaena sp. 1, cf. Eubalaena sp. 2), at least three balaenopterids (“Balaenoptera” cortesi “var.” portisi Sacco, 1890, cf. Balaenoptera, Balaenopteridae gen. et sp. indet.) and a new species of rorqual (Balaenoptera bertae n. sp.) that exhibits a number of derived features that place it within the genus Balaenoptera. is new species of Balaenoptera is relatively small (estimated 61 cm bizygomatic width) and exhibits a comparatively nar- row vertex, an obliquely (but precipitously) sloping frontal adjacent to vertex, anteriorly directed and short zygomatic processes, and squamosal creases. -

Stap na stap. • Vertrekplaats: parking Provinciedomein Halve Maan Omer Vanaudenhovelaan. • Afstand: 5,5 km (ongeveer 2 uur). • Type: stadswandeling, een klein stukje over de groene stadsvesten. • Wegdek: verharde wegen en zandwegen. Aangepast schoeisel wenselijk. • Bewegwijzering: geen (zie kaart). • Niet volledig toegankelijk voor rolwagens en kinderwagens. De Demer: 85 km meanderen De Demer ontspringt in Ketsingen, deelgemeente van Tongeren en slingert zich via ’s Herenelderen (Riemst), Hoeselt, Bilzen en Hasselt naar Diest. Daarna meandert de rivier via Zichem en Aarschot naar Werchter. Hier gaat hij – 85 km na de bron – op in de Dijle. Of … omgekeerd: want de Demer is de grootste van de twee. Stad op ‘Linkeroever’ Zonder de Demer was Diest niet de bruisende stad van vandaag. Al in de prehistorie bevolken onze voorouders de linkeroever. Logisch. Hier vinden ze vis, is er stromend water. De scheepvaart op de Demer zal eeuwen later de handel en dus ook de groei van de stad stimuleren. Die ontwikkelt zich ook aan de hoge linkeroever. Rechts – aan de lage oever – is de bodem over het algemeen te instabiel en te nat voor huizenbouw. Ook voor akkerbouw is de Demervallei niet geschikt. De slibbodem is wel ideaal voor graslanden en het hooien van gras. Hij bevat veel nutriënten uit Haspengouw die de rivier in dit overstromingsgebied afzet. Deze alluviale vlakte staat Colofon bekend als het ‘Webbekoms Broek’. Ver. A section of 6.10 m through the Deurne Sand Member (Diest Formation, Late Miocene) in Antwerpen (Antwerp) is described, which has been observed during the construction works of a new hospital building in the southern part of Deurne, and here called “Middelares Hospital Section” after that location. This temporary outcrop section can well be correlated with a similar one which was outcropping some 35 years ago, and was located at some 1.5 km to the NE. It was studied in detail by De Meuter et al. (1967), who called it the “Borgerhout-Rivierenhof VII B.R.” section. Since that section was the most relevant of the previously described sections in the Deurne Sand Member, it is here suggested to designate that section as stratotype for the member. -

Palaeontologia Electronica palaeo-electronica.org A new skull of the fossil porpoise Numataphocoena yamashitai (Cetacea: Phocoenidae) from the upper part of the Horokaoshirarika Formation (lower Pliocene), Numata Town, Hokkaido, Japan, and its phylogenetic position Yoshihiro Tanaka and Hiroto Ichishima ABSTRACT An early Pliocene porpoise, Numataphocoena yamashitai from Hokkaido, Japan, is known from the holotype, a fairly well-preserved skeleton with an incomplete skull and a referred earbone. A new skull referred to Numataphocoena yamashitai found from almost the same locality as the holotype is interesting because it expands knowl- edge of skull morphology and improves the diagnosis of this taxon. Numataphocoena yamashitai differs from other phocoenids in having the characteristic feature in the maxilla associated with the posterior dorsal infraorbital foramen, narrower and sharper anterior part of the internal acoustic meatus, and a robust anterior process of the peri- otic. A new cladistic analysis places Numataphocoena yamashitai adjacent to Haboro- phocoena toyoshimai and Haborophocoena minutus, among a clade of early branching phocoenids, all of which are chronologically and geographically close to each other. The new skull is probably a younger individual because it is about 80% the size of that of the holotype and it shows closed but unfused sutures. Our description of this specimen helps to understand the intraspecies variation of the extinct species Numataphocoena yamashitai. Yoshihiro Tanaka. The specimen is a partial skull and lacks diagnostic features present in the posterior regions of the skull, but a parsimony analysis based on available characters determined the whale is likely linked to modern Mesoplodon and Hyperoodon. Identification of this specimen is necessary for biogeographical purposes and other investigations using the fossil as a marker for the paleocoastline. Furthermore, this whale is an important and unique tool that can be used to study the development of the East African Rift. -

Consistent with the result of Marx, Lambert & de Muizon (2017), the Cetotheriidae form a clade with the Balaenopteroidea, and “a clade comprising Isanacetus, Parietobalaena and related taxa” is located basal to the Balaenopteroidea + Cetotheriidae clade. Taikicetus inouei is placed in the clade with most of members of “Cetotheres” sensu lato comprising Isanacetus, Parietobalaena and related taxa. Taikicetus inouei can be distinguished from the other members of “Cetotheres” sensu lato in having an anteriorly swollen short zygomatic process, high triangular coronoid process, and angular process, which does not reach as far posterior as the mandibular condyle. -

E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT. The lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of a temporary outcrop in the Antwerp area is described. The deposits can be attributed to the Kiel Sands and the Antwerpen Sands members, both belonging to the Lower and Middle Miocene Berchem Formation. Invertebrate and vertebrate macrofossils are abundantly present. The molluscan fauna compares well to former findings in the Antwerpen Sands Member. It can be concluded that the studied sequence is continuously present in the Antwerp area, and thickens in a northward direction. The study of the marine mammal fauna shows that eurhinodelphinids are the most common fossil odontocete (toothed-bearing cetaceans) in the Antwerpen Sands Member, associated here with kentriodontine, physeteroid, squalodontid, mysticete (baleen whales) and pinniped (seals) fragmentary remains. Both the molluscan fauna and the organic-walled palynomorphs indicate for the Antwerpen Sands Member deposition in a neritic, energetic environment, which shallowed upwards.
