WRA 150-019—Evolution of American Thought Project 4—Non-Paper Remix
Purpose The purpose of this four-part project is to help you learn to work within non-alphabetic and/or material and/or technological spaces, alone or collaboratively. The purpose of the proposal portion is for you to get immediate feedback on your ideas so you don’t lose time pursuing something that won’t work well. The purpose of the presentation portion is to help you become more comfortable with public speaking for other future courses and careers. The reflection will (hopefully!) help you conceive of writing as more that just letters on a page.
Audience Your audience will be one you identify.
Instructions Choose Project One, Project Two, or Project Three, and “re-create” it in a non-paper-based format. You should incorporate new approaches and ideas in terms of content. So, basically, this becomes not just a modal remix (in terms of what tools and media—or mode—you used) but also a remix of strategies and rhetorical approaches. Think about how mode (delivery), strategy, and other choices you make (visuals, etc.) affect how your audience may receive/interpret your project. You may work individually to remix your paper, or you may work collaboratively to remix one of each of your papers into a new genre using a new mode. The four components of Project Four are:
Proposal You are required to submit a proposal form for this assignment. Please include the following components: Which paper you chose to remix Why you chose to remix that particular paper What media/mode of delivery you will use to create an effective remix Who your intended audience is What message you hope to convey to your audience What revisions you might consider—both stylistically and in terms of content What rhetorical strategies will you use to convey that message?
Project You will submit a project in non-alphabetic form. So, you might want to think of this as a non- paper paper. The following are examples of new genres you can consider, but you are certainly not limited to this list: Website Diary or Journal Slide Presentation Video Poem/Flow/Hip Hop Performance Poster Skit/Performance/Screenplay Comics Visual Collage Podcast Piece of artwork or craft Zine Presentation Presentations must visually represent your work in some way (if you made a website, show it to all of us; if you made a collage, bring it in; if you wrote a skit or play, perform it for us). In other words, choose your presentation format to fit the project. Presentations are not graded, but you must present in order to submit your project for a grade. Also, your presentation is NOT THE PROJECTYou will each sign up for a six-minute presentation slot. For collaborative projects, I will multiply the number of group members by five minutes to come up with the total time allowed for the group presentation.
Reflection You will write a two-page reflection analyzing your project and reflecting on what you learned from it. Hopefully you will discuss your writing as something more than just alphabetic text on paper. Think about your idea of writing at the beginning of this class, and then discuss how those ideas may or may not have changed.
Some Things to Consider Group work can be very rewarding and also potentially frustrating. Be aware that who you choose to work with will affect your work, so always be thinking about what someone else brings to the project as well as what you can offer. If you choose to work collaboratively, I will work with your group to ensure that each group member is participating in an acceptable way and that your final project entails comparable work on each group member’s part.
