The 2016-2017 school year is quickly coming to an end. Summer is a great time to relax and enjoy with family and friends. However, it is just as important to continue to keep our brains active.

The Edgewater School District is offering a Summer Enrichment Program. We are committed to providing enriching learning experiences for all students. In order to strengthen the abilities of our students, we are offering summer enrichment classes for students entering grades 3-6. Members of the staff will be facilitating a variety of enticing classes for all learners.

Each class will meet twice a week, either on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. There will be two sessions each day; from 9:00am-10:30am, and from 10:30am-12:00pm. Classes will begin the week of June 26, 2017 until July 20, 2017 (4 weeks). There will no classes held on Tuesday, July 4, 2017.

The total cost for the 8 sessions (each class) is $50 per child. Some classes will have an additional fee for materials.

Classes are filled on a first come, first serve basis. Enrollment is limited to 12 students per section. In order to ensure a spot for your child, please pre-register as soon as possible. All pre-registration forms must be in by Friday, May 12, 2017. Payment is not necessary at this time. Once I have received all pre-registration forms, I will send home further information with the payment amount needed to finalize your child’s registration for the Summer Enrichment Program.

Mad Science (extra material fee: $10.00) Calling all mad scientists! Enter if you dare! Come have some creepy fun this summer. Join the Mad Scientist Club! As a student of mad science, you will learn about the mysteries of creating erupting volcanoes. You will make gooey homemade slime, crystal rock candy, edible play dough and much more!! (Entering Grades 3 & 4 ~ Monday/Wednesday @ 10:30am-12:00pm) (Entering Grades 5 & 6 ~ Monday/Wednesday @ 9:00am-10:30am)

STEM Bridge Building (extra material fee: $10.00) Calling all engineers! Get your build on this summer in STEM Bridge Building. We will explore geometric shapes and learn how these shapes become three-dimensional building blocks for bridges. We will learn what shapes are strongest and why. We will test our knowledge of these shapes when we build bridges out of paper, gum drops, toothpicks, spaghetti, and popsicle sticks. Hardhats not required!

Writing Through Art (extra material fee: $10.00) If you appreciate art and love to write, this is the perfect class for you! In this class, we will view different works of art by many famous artists and discuss the meaning behind each piece. The artwork will inspire students to create all different types of writing including essays, poems & fairy tales. Writing through art not only allows for creative writing, it also encourages engaging discussions. So let’s get our visionary ideas flowing, and begin our writing journey! Writing Across Genres Fairytales, fables, realistic fiction and more, oh my! Students will have the opportunity to revisit their favorite genres from the school year. Using some of our favorite stories for inspiration, students will write fun and exciting stories. So let’s get our creative ideas flowing, and let writing take us on an unforgettable adventure! Sizzling Book Club (extra material fee: $10.00) This club will allow readers to explore new “sizzling” books in fun and exciting ways! Students will read and discuss fiction and nonfiction books together. Students will grill up new ideas to share their books by creating interactive projects such as comic strips, designing a new book jacket, developing a website or Google slides, painting a picture, or writing a play! Computer Science – Fun with Coding Think back to December…Remember when you participated in the Hour of Code during Library Media? If you enjoyed this class, we will continue to learn the computer programming language of code this summer. Students will be introduced to Scratch, MIT’s free programming platform that is designed for children ages 8 and up. The drag and drop method makes it fun and easy to create your own interactive stories, games and animations, plus share your creations with others on the Scratch website. If yes, this is the class for you! In this class we will look at everything from the basics of iMovie to various video editing options. This will give you the opportunity to take your videos and make something that you are proud of when you watch it back in years to come. You can impress family and friends by using iMovie to create a musical photo album for a family birthday party or anniversary. In this class, you will explore different Google apps that are being used in the classroom. We will use an edgewaterschools’ Google account to create our own work, to peer edit, and to share our work with others. We will look at how to use Google Docs for writing, Google Forms to create surveys or tests, Google Slides for multimedia presentations, and Google Drawings for art projects. Cooking Up, Science & Math (extra material fee: $10.00) Ever wonder what makes bread rise? Why the sugar won't dissolve in your iced tea? Discover the answers to these questions and more in Science and Math in the Kitchen. We will explore common chemistry that is used in cooking and baking. We will experiment with ingredients and taste (yes, taste) the results! We will measure the ingredients and explore fractions and measurement. Please make sure that the teacher is aware of any food allergies as we will be eating our work! All About S.T.E.M. (extra material fee: $10.00) Get ready to ask questions, find solutions, test those solutions, and redesign your projects! We will learn about force, motion, engineering, and design in a fun, hands-on class. This class will introduce students to the Engineering Design Model used for inquiries and investigations. ” How To” Create (extra material fee: $10.00) Get ready for some crafting and writing! This class is a culmination of arts and crafts with writing. Students will create various fun and exciting crafts. Then, they will use their writing skills to write detailed expository essays telling others how to recreate the crafts. This class will showcase creativity through crafting and how much fun writing can be! Service Club (extra material fee: $10.00) Want to spend some time this summer helping others? Look no further than the Service Club. We will work together to identify opportunities for community service in our area. We may clean up a park, visit the elderly, or create a mural to brighten up an outdoor space. We will research charitable organizations that raise money for others and decide how to raise for that cause. Could we hold a bake sale or a have a lemonade stand? Through cooperation and determination, we can make a difference in the lives of others. Permission slips will be sent home for service projects that requires us to leave the school premises. There is a $10 materials fee that will be used to purchase supplies for the service projects. Exercise Education Join Exercise Education! Students will learn the basics of a variety of team games as well as the history behind them! Students will practice working as a team in following rules, showing sportsmanship, and fair play through a variety of well-known games. Let’s get physical! Mixed Media Art for Beginners (extra material fee: $10.00) What is mixed media? Well, you can find out by joining this exciting club! During this class, we will take the mystery out of mixed media and help you get started in making art. In this class, we will cover all the basics and teach you how to lay out a mixed media art piece, step-by-step and item-by-item. You’ll learn about common materials and how each media within the piece works and interacts with the others. Even the most inexperienced beginner will develop a new appreciation for the art form and learn skills they can use to start making their own mixed media art.
