Rapid Smart Survey on male and female farmers’ satisfaction with plant clinic visits

Terms of Reference for Data Enumerators Plantwise is a global collaborative programme, led by CABI, working to improve food security and livelihoods by reducing crop losses particularly for the smallholder farmer. This is achieved in partnership with existing extension services to establish plant clinics which advise farmers on plant health problems, and a global knowledge bank which brings together plant health information for practical use. Plantwise also works to help strengthen national plant health systems by facilitating links between key stakeholders- government, research, extension, agro-input suppliers and farmers.

Networks of locally-owned and operated plant clinics are established, based on a similar approach to human health clinics, where farmers can find advice to manage and prevent crop problems. Agricultural advisory staff, trained as plant doctors, learn methods to identify any problem on any crop brought to the clinics, and provide diagnoses and appropriate recommendations guided by national and international best practice standards.

CABI is carrying out a short survey in five Plantwise countries (Rwanda, Malawi, Ghana, Pakistan, Sri Lanka) to assess the level of satisfaction of farmers with the plant clinic service they have received.

Objectives of the survey: Conduct a rapid assessment of male and female farmers from two Plantwise countries in Asia (Pakistan and Sri Lanka) to;

 Understand whether they were satisfied with the plant clinic service they received  Understand whether their level of satisfaction extended to sharing the advice and recommending the service to others

Requirements for the Study to be provided by CABI:  Standard questionnaire  Sample list of farmers including gender, phone number, date of last clinic visit, crop brought, advice given (to be treated as confidential information)  Standard data entry form in Excel

Specific Tasks:  Translate the survey form in Urdu, Sindhi (for Pakistan) and in Sinhala and Tamil (For Sri Lanka), if necessary  Conduct telephone interviews with male and female farmers (min 250, max 300 per country) in each country – Pakistan and Sri Lanka  Ensure equal representation of male and female farmers as far as possible from the available data  Enter data from each interview into data entry form  Share one-page summary of interview process, e.g. number males/ female’s interviewed, total respondents, problems, issues etc.  Analyse the data and present findings through graphs, tables, illustrations, etc. covered with short extrapolation text.  Ship completed data entry, analysis and forms to CABI Nairobi Office on completion

The work must be completed in a two week period. If possible a more rapid completion would be preferable.
