UASOM Huntsville Class of 2006

Neurology (256-551-4461)

Overview  Director: Dr. Anjaneyulu Alapati  Attendings: Drs. Alapati, Mulpur, Greer, Arora and their NPs  Contact (for both Psychology and Neurology): Bill Moyers (256-551-4461)  These are run as two separate 4-week rotations (there is a separate shelf exam for each!)  Each student is assigned to their own preceptor. You will work one-on-one with the neurologist seeing patients in the hospital and in their office (Blackwell Towers or elsewhere). Part of your grade comes from an observed H&P where you have to do the neuro exam. Neurology shelf exam at the end of the 4th week.  No overnight call or weekends.  Lectures are generally 1-3 times/week and are typically during lunch (with food provided) or in the morning.  Conference every Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m. in Dr. Alapati’s office; and a conference every Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m. in the hospital EEG lab on 8th floor, where you review images and discuss cases with the attendings.  You will present one basic science topic on a Wednesday morning conference. Make sure to bring your laptop.

Schedule/Duties 1. Work with individual preceptor in their office and in the hospital (admissions and consultations). 2. The rotation is only four weeks, but the shelf is as difficult as any other, so be disciplined with your time. As far as the daily schedule, this is one of the most preceptor-dependent rotations. 3. You will take call 3 days, which should only last until 7:00pm. Again, this varies depending on your preceptor.

Books  Blueprints, Case Files, PreTest  Maxwell Guide is great for the neuro physical exam.

Hints  The SOAP notes, H&Ps, and physical exams are a lot different from other rotations but you’ll catch on quickly.  Get your neuro exam down pat quickly, and do it the same way each time. Practice it with every patient.
