DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

BEFORE YOU CAN REGISTER FOR THE COURSE:

Step 1: Students must find an internship placement before they will be allowed to register for the internship course. The best source on campus to find internship opportunities is at the Center for Career Management (CCM), located in Simmons Hall, Room 301; http://www.uakron.edu/career or call 330-972-7747. Information is also posted on the Internship and Career Opportunities bulletin board by the sociology department – Olin, Rm. 247.

Step 2: Students must complete the internship orientation offered by CCM. The orientation is available either through Springboard or in-person. The information about this brief orientation is on CCM’s website.

Step 3: Once students have completed the orientation, they are required to meet with a career advisor at CCM (e-mail [email protected]; 330-972-6586). They will review student resumes, discuss strategies to prospect for internship opportunities, and give advice on successful interviewing.

REGISTERING FOR THE INTERNSHIP COURSE:

Step 1: Once an internship placement has been secured, a Work Acceptance Form (WAF) is required before the student may begin working and to register for the class. Once the WAF has been obtained, students register for the course at CCM. Details about the WAF are provided by CCM.

Step 2: Meet with Dr. Valerie Callanan before beginning internship hours to discuss course requirements (e-mail [email protected] or call 330- 972-6863). In addition to the 120 hours of internship service, these include regular meetings with Dr. Callanan, readings, a journal of your experience, a professional resume, and a final paper.

DURING AND AFTER THE INTERNSHIP

Step 1: A mid-semester evaluation coordinated through CCM is filled out by the student; a copy is given to your career advisor CCM.

Step 2: Student completes final paper for Dr. Callanan by end of 14th week.

Step 3: A final performance evaluation must be completed by both the student and the employer; this evaluation is required for the internship grade.

Step 4: Students must meet with a CCM advisor after the internship hours are completed no later than the week before final exam week. The student’s final performance evaluation must be given to CCM at this exit interview.
