Medical Considerations for Eating Disorders

Overview: Mental health and substance abuse professionals are often ill equipped to treat individuals and families impacted by eating disorders, especially the medical considerations. This workshop will present an overview to the medical considerations when treating individuals with eating disorders.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify medical considerations for eating disorders a. Describe signs and symptoms indicative of an bulimia and/or or anorexia b. Describe laboratory tests used to evaluate patient with either bulimia or anorexia c. Discuss medical risks associated with chronic eating disorders

2. Identify local resources

Target Audience: Mental health and substance abuse professionals (e.g., counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists, chemical dependency counselors, and nurses) working with individuals and families experiencing eating disorders.

Trainer: Andrea S. Clem, DO Andrea Clem graduated from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine with DO degree and Indiana University of Pennsylvania with BS degree in Home Economics/Consumer Services. Doctor Clem currently works at Ohio University Osteopathic Medical Centers in family practice devoted to women’s health and Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine as assistant professor of family medicine. She is a member of the following: American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, American Osteopathic Association, American Academy of Osteopathy, Cranial Academy, Ohio Osteopathic Association.
