Binary Covalent Compounds

NAME ______DATE ______HOUR ______David Ladehoff Nomenclature Module Binary Covalent Compounds

We will be using the ChemSketch software to build binary covalent compounds. In order to use the software, find the program under the ACD Labs 11.0 and open ChemSketch. Click the go-away boxes to get to the running program. Immediately, find the program in the same folder for 3D Viewer and open the 3D View program. A blank screen will appear on your computer.

Click on the ChemSketch bar at the bottom left on the screen (see above). This will take you to the drawing portion of the program. Add the elements necessary to construct the molecule we are wanting to study. →

Look for the element you want to add to the board. If we are looking to draw a carbon from carbon dioxide locate the C on the side bar(see above). Click and place a carbon on the screen. When you do this it automatically forms a CH4. The hydrogen atoms will leave once you connect another element to the carbon. Find the O on the side bar, click and move to the screen. Click and hold to drop an oxygen and bond to the carbon, notice the hydrogen atoms leave. Connect the two elements again to form a double bond, two lines between them. Drop another oxygen (the dioxide means two oxygen atoms) and attach to the carbon. Draw a second connection from this oxygen to the carbon, notice that the carbon letter disappears-it is still there. Your sketch should look like this,

. NAME ______DATE ______HOUR ______

Click the arrange bar( ) and the geometry of the three atoms will look like . Take this format and press the on the bottom left of the screen and you will see the molecule with various models to view it in 3D. What do you see on your screen?
