INFORMATION & OPERATION

On 12.01.2011 at 2.55 AM, a PCR call was received that some unknown persons have stolen two cash chests (gullaks) having Rs. 8000-10000/- from Gurudwara Guru Nanak Satsang Sham Nagar, New Delhi. The police of PS Tilak Nagar reached the spot and found that the Gurudwara had been burgled and two cash chests of the Gurudwara were missing. It was informed by the manger of the Gurudwara that he had heard some noise in the night in the Gurudwara and had made Hue and Cry due to which several people had gathered there but the thieves escaped.

The scene of crime was inspected and it was found that the burglar had climbed up the balcony of the first floor by using the hard top of an already parked Tata Sumo adjoining the Gurudwara. Thereafter the burglar had taken the help of the rain water pipes to reach the second floor balcony. Once in the second floor balcony, the burglar had removed the grill of one of the windows of the main hall of the Gurudwara to enter into it and reached the cash chests. It was observed that all the exit doors of the Gurudwara had been unbolted by the burglar, probably to use as escape routes in any contingency. Further it was observed that some of the extra carpets which were lying there had been dragged to the stairs going to the roof. On the inspection of the roof it was found that the two cash chests were lying there in broken condition and the cash was missing. The carpets had probably been laid in order to reduce noise while dragging the cash chests. On further inspection of the roof top it was found that there was a long trail of curtains and bed sheets tied up with a pipe in one corner of the roof which fell downward till it touched the ground. The manger of the Gurudwara identified the curtains and bed sheets to be theirs which were lying in the store of the Gurudwara. It seems that the burglars had escaped using this trail. A case vide FIR No.9/11 u/s 457/380 IPC dated 12.1.11 was registered and investigation was started there and then. During investigation, Ct. Naresh No.1769/W who is the beat constable of the beat in which this Gurudwara lies and was in the night patrolling duty had also come to the spot. After assessing the situation, Ct. Naresh shared a thought with other police personnel that long back he had seen some movie in which the hero was burglar and he used to first create escape route whenever he used to break into any house. The case seemed to be similar to him. Ct. Naresh also recalled that the burglar in the movie also used to identify a hiding place within that house which could be used to remain hidden inside just in case of a real time threat and to walk out later after the situation is diffused.

It was this point that appealed the most to Ct. Naresh. The whole police team under ASI Gurucharan started room to room search of the huge Gurudwara premises but could not find any one. Not satisfied with the results, Ct. Naresh again started the search minutely and it was at the roof top that he found a sikh person hiding himself under heap of sacks in a small dingy room made for generator of the Gurudwara. On having been asked ‘Who are you?, the person replied that ‘Log Mujhe Jugnu Kahate Hai kyonki Main Raat ko Chamakta Hoon’. The person was identified as Manjeet Singh @ Jugnu S/o Sh. Trilochan Singh R/o B-69, Sham Nagar, Tilak Nagar, New Delhi. During his personal search Rs.4844/-(Notes) and Rs.2958/- (Coins), one clock of Gurudwara, one saw (Cutter), two blades of saw, one screw driver and a plier were recovered from his possession.

INTERROGATION

On interrogation of Manjeet Singh @ Jugnu, he revealed that he got inspired from a famous film ‘Jugnu’ and used the same modus operandi to commit the theft.

Thus it was the presence of mind of Ct. Naresh that led to the discovery and apprehension of the ‘Jugnu’. Staff involved in the good work is being rewarded suitably.
