While Conservatives Are Inclined to Support a Harsh, Mean and Unhinged Society, Progressives

What do progressives stand for? A decent society, where everyone is paid a “reasonable” wage and, regardless of class background, race, gender, religion, or sexuality, has an equal opportunity to become a boss or a politician. A decent society still has bankers, but they are less greedy. And a decent society still punishes wrongdoers, though more gently. While conservatives are inclined to support a harsh, mean and unhinged society, progressives support a soft, nurturing and sensible society. While one looks at government as a strict disciplinarian father, the other sees the state as more like a nurturing parent. How dull. Progressives tend to hold up their intellectual calm as an achievement, but the problem is that progressivism is not particularly motivating. It’s hedged. Bankers are bad people on the whole, but we still need them. There’s too much inequality, but we don’t want to get rid of it entirely. The progressive vision of society is only quantitatively different, but not qualitatively distinct, so there’s no banner to gather under. Leftism is an alternative to progressivism. It sees society as rife with class conflict and places itself on the side of the exploited classes. Leftism pits those who control wealth and power in society (the 1%) versus those who do not (the 99%). They trace the source of this conflict to the differing interests of those who live by working, and those who live by privilege. The Occupy movement, grounded in leftism, provided a reform banner. Alliance of Progressive Voters. The group's purpose is to promote the goals, policies, and candidates of the Democratic Party at the national, state, and local levels.
