COURSE DESCRIPTION Adapted Circuit Weight Training. Recommended preparation: recent physical examination and disability verification. Designed to address the individual exercise needs of students with limiting conditions. Instruction includes development of an overall fitness routine involving all aspects of body conditioning: cardiovascular training, muscular strength and endurance training, and flexibility and balance exercises.

FYI: Your class is combined with a regular P.E. class

PURPOSE OF APE The purpose of adapted physical education is to create a safe and appropriate environment in which a person with a disability can develop physical and motor fitness skills leading to lifelong involvement in physical activity.

WHAT APE IS NOT A.P.E. is instructional and educational in intent and application; it is NOT a substitute for physical, occupational, recreational, kinesio, or any other therapy. The goal is to teach, not provide therapy.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion the students will be able to: a. Employ lifting techniques into their exercise program b. Incorporate aerobic equipment into their exercise program c. Incorporate flexibility exercises relative to fitness goals d. Organize all exercise modalities in the most effective order based on individual fitness goals e. Provide feedback to instructor to better facilitate exercise effectiveness f. Employ safety procedure g. Develop skills for independent living

GRADING Attendance: 50% Absences: More than 6 absences and you will be dropped unless you communicate with me on your status. I will accept 1 free absence and you can make up 2 classes during the semester. Please call/email me if you will miss more than 1 day during the week. Participation: 40% (it is very important that you participate in the pre and post fitness assessments that are scheduled for you during the semester/sign-up for ADAP 875-Adapted Fitness Evaluation) Homework: 10%

LOCKERS You can use any of the small lockers all semester with your own lock. You can also use a big locker for the day only, with your own lock. Make sure at the end of the semester that you take all of your belongings out of the lockers, otherwise it will be cleaned out for you!
