Melanie Reed  Principal Chad Cole  Assistant Principal Laura Beth Short  Assistant Principal General Permissions

Below is a description of permissions that Buford Middle School will need throughout the year for your child. Please read and carefully consider the permissions you wish to grant your child for the school year. After considering the topics below, please select either “Permitted” or “Restricted” for each of the activities below and sign that you acknowledge the Friday Spirit Wear Guidelines on the back of this page. If you have any questions or require further information, please contact the school at 770-904-3690. Acknowledge Friday Spirit Wear Guidelines – Friday spirit wear is a privilege and not a guarantee. Buford Middle School grants this privilege based on the students’ ability to follow dress code policy and his/her attendance. Any student who has a dress code infraction during the week (from Thursday 1:00 of one week to Thursday 1:00 of the next week) will NOT be permitted to wear spirit wear on Friday. In addition, only students who have been at school all week with no absences, checkouts, or tardies are permitted to wear spirit wear on Fridays. If a student is absent, tardy, or has a checkout on Friday, he/she will not be permitted to wear spirit wear on the following Friday. Be Photographed or Videoed – At times during the school year, students will be photographed and videoed for various reasons. These reasons may include, but are not limited to classroom projects or yearbook. Please note that if a student is photographed by an outside source, other than a school photographer, we will notify you. Create and/or Use Student Email or Online Account – During the year, students may be asked to participate in activities and assignments that require the use of an email or other online account. This permission allows students to use or create accounts for school-related activities and assignments. Participate in Human Sexuality and HIV/AIDS Education – By State mandate, all public school systems in the state of Georgia must include this instruction as one facet of a comprehensive health education program. These lessons are taught factually and sensitively in health and science education classes in grades six, seven, and eight. State law requires that you be allowed the option of excluding your child from these lessons. Publish Students’ Images and Work Products – Throughout the school year, the school or your child’s teacher may include photographs, videos, and examples of work of individual students or student groups in a newsletter or on a school website, blog, or other digital platform. Staff members may also occasionally include such images or work products in presentations for other educators. In instances where these items are published, students will be identified by first name only. No last names will be used.Read PG-13 “Red Dot” Books – In an effort to accommodate the varied interests, reading, and maturity levels of our students our media center purchases many books dealing with a variety of topics. Please be assured that our media staff does its best to ensure that all materials selected are appropriate for our students, however not all materials will be appropriate for all students. In an effort to help our students select the books most appropriate for them, we mark the more mature books with a red dot. Watch Supplemental Videos – Occasionally, classes will watch a video to either supplement instruction or to reward students for good work or behavior. Because all films do not have a General Audiences (G) rating, your permission is necessary for your child to view PG or PG-13 movies. Walk to other BCSS Campuses– Grants permission for students to walk to or be transported to and attend school related functions or activities on other Buford City Schools campuses, including the Daisy Shadburn Fine Arts Center.
