He married ANN (FULKARSON) FOLKERSON July 19, 1749 in New Jersey. She was born Abt. 1729 in Somerset Co. New Jersey, and died 1767. She perhaps descended from Dirck Volckerszen, Norwegian, who arrived in New Netherland in 1632, married Christina, daughter of Guillaume Vigne, eight children. The family name now is “Fulkarson”. They relocated after 1761 and came to reside in Pennsylvania.

Notes for BARNET AKA "BARNES" SMOCK: Barnet Smock was a Revolutionary soldier. In 1789 he and his wife came on foot from New Jersey to Westmoreland County. He was a common laborer and farmer and his children were: Elizabeth Smock; Abraham7 Smock; Henry Smock and Mary Smock.

Notes: Edwin K. Smock (5 Feb 2003) It is interesting that in this early census (1790), there was no effort to designate the age of females. This section of the census was documented as having been completed and subscribed on the 5th Day of May, 1791. (This would help explain the reason some census ages do not match other documents depicting age of an individual, or the number of children in a household etc. (i.e. If a son was born April 10, 1791, he could very well appear in the 1790 census as being in the age bracket of 16 and under. The census was a counting of people as of the day of the census visit .)

The census consisted of “Heads of Families” and 5 columns: (1) Free white males of 16 years and upward, including heads of families, (2) Free white males under 16 years, (3) Free white females, including heads of families, (4) All other persons, (5) Slaves.

Note provided by Edwin K. Smock July 2002 The following was taken from Mary Smock’s obituary: “She was the daughter of Barnet Smock, who migrated from New Jersey in 1789. Her father lived on this farm twenty-one years. The maiden name of the mother of the deceased was Jane Berdine. She was married to Peter Wene, by whom she had three children, named Sarah, Anna and Jane. Barnet Smock was her second husband.”

Notes for ELIZABETH SMOCK: Elizabeth Smock married James Burgan in Westmoreland Co. who was also a native of Westmoreland County, Penn. Eleven children were the result of this union. James Burgan followed farming all of his life, and died at the age of sixty-five years on the place where now occupied by his grandson, Theodore. Leonard6 Smock. Born 16 Apr 1762, at Red Bank, New Jersey, about 15 miles south of Philadelphia, PA. Married Jane Ween (Anglicised Wayne), sister of General Wayne. (Source: Harold Smock.) Will dated 29 Apr 1833, proved 19 Apr 1834, Crawford Co., PA., to sons Peter, Cornelius, John, Leonard and daughter Anne Loper. (Source: Dr. Tuttle.) Leonard Smock and Jane Ween moved from New Jersey to Fayette Co., PA, then to Westmoreland Co., PA, where they lived at Redstone. Finally, between 1796

Abraham7 and his wife Isabelle (Shepler) Smock are buried in Fells Cemetery, Fellsburg, PA. Their headstones read: Abraham Smock Died June 8, 1831 (June 8, the 8 is hard to read however, it is a single digit.) Aged 44 yrs, ??? mths (could not read the months)

Isabelle Smock (on Abraham’s right) Died June 8, 1834 (stone is broken, yrs and mths are unreadable)

To the immediate left of Abraham is the grave of Jacob Shepler “ Who departed this life May 16th A.D. 1833 in the 45th year of his age”. (This Jacob Shepler was the son of Mathais Shepler and Margaret Houseman).

To Jacob’s left (plus one empty space), is the grave of Philip Shepler “Died May 22, 1829 aged 88 yrs. There is an American flag with a Revolutionary War bronze emblem/holder attached near/to Philip’s headstone. (This Philip was married to Mary Hill.)

The grave of Elizabeth (Shepler) Smock reads: “Elizabeth” wife of Henry Smock died Sept 27, 1882 aged 93 yrs. (Her birth would equate to 1789.) There are two headstones to her immediate left however, they are unreadable. The closest one may read Davis R. (I could not be sure but that is my best guess.).

There are numerous Shepler graves within a 20 yd circle of Abraham’s grave. Many are not readable. They will be listed at the end of this section.

The 1810 census shows, under Abraham, 1 son and 1 daughter, both under the age of 10 or less (This most likely was Peter, born 1808 and Mary, born near the same time - 1809.)

The 1820 census shows, under Abraham, 3 sons age10 and under (probably mistake, Peter should be in the 11 to 15 age bracket) and 3 daughters, 2 in the 10 and under bracket and 1 in the 11 to 15 age bracket.

The 1830 census shows, under Abraham, 3 sons in the proper age bracket, those being Abraham, Philip and John, and 2 daughters listed, 1 in the 16 to 20 year bracket (b. 1810-1815) and 1 in the 6 to 10 year bracket (b.1820-1825) This daughter could be Eliza (Elizabeth).

In the 1850 cencus taken on 19 Oct 1850, Mary’s age is given as 40.

The obituary of Mrs. Sarah Jane Stone (Barnesville, Belmont County, Ohio Wednesday, September 18, 1918) states that she was born in Belle Vernon, PA April 2, 1840 and was the daughter of John and Mary Smock Carnes.

Peter and his sister Mary married into the Carnes/Stark family (John and Sarah (Stark) Carnes). Peter married Ann Carnes and Mary married John Stark Carnes.

They had eleven children: Ruhama Smock; Mary Smock; Philip Smock; Jane Smock; Lucinda Smock; Samuel Smock; Barney Smock; Isabella Smock, dead; Sarah Smock, Margaret Smock and Catherine Smock. Note provided by Edwin K. Smock (August 2002) I found another Elizabeth Shepler grave in Fells Cemetery (8 August 2002). The headstone reads Elizabeth wife of Davis Shepler died March 11, 1819 in her 39 year.

Elizabeth is referenced in the book "The Old and New Monongahela" by John S. Van Voorhis as being the daughter of "Peter Shepler the Older" the brother of Mathias Shepler.

1850 Census Rostraver Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA. Lists Elizabeth Smock, age 58, living with Samuel Reeves and her daughter Mary (Jane Smock) Reeves. This would make Elizabeth Betsy (Shepler) Smock's year of birth 1792. (see Notes for Jane Smock)

1870 Census Rostraver Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA Lists Elizabeth as "Lizzi" Smock living with D. Douglass and her daughter Sarah (Smock) Douglass and her age as 78 which agrees with the 1850 census as to her being born in 1792.

Her tombstone there reads " Eliza Jane Kimple June 1, 1819 - Aug 30, 1855" This information comes from one Barbara Hall a descendent. Barbara further states " The "Births" bible of Philip Sigler Kimple says " Eliza Jane Smock was born 1818". This was probably written long after she had died. Obviously, the writer knew only the year as all other birth records are complete dates." (The date on the tombstone conflicts with the date on the tombstone of Samuel Smock her brother, but there it is, make of it what you will. Gene Smock August 22, 2002)

Notes for MARY SMOCK: Aunt Polly has passed away, was on the lips of almost every one on Friday evening as her death was announced. Mrs. Mary Smock Corwin was ninety-seven years old on Wednesday prior to her death, which occurred Friday, January 6, 1888. She was born January 4, 1791, on the farm now owned by Capt. Joseph Shepler, in Rostraver township, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania. The farm at that time was owned by one Joseph Becketa name well known in the early history of Western Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Barnet Smock, who migrated from New Jersey in 1789. Her father lived on this farm twenty-one years. The maiden name of the mother of the deceased was Jane Berdine. She was married to Peter Wene, by whom she had three children, named Sarah, Anna and Jane. Barnet Smock was her second husband. The deceased was married to Morris Corwin at Brownsville by Esq. Elias Baillins, on the 18th day of June, 1807. Morris Corwin died in Bellevernon, September 20, 1835, in the same house in which his wife died. Aunt Polly Corwin, as she was familiarly called, and her husband came to Bellevernon April 1, 1816, and occupied the house in which she died. She lived in this same house for seventy-two years, with the exception of three months. She lived to know that the sugar camp of three-quarters of a century ago had become a thriving town of two thousand souls. She outlived three generations of citizens. She was born in the early days of Washington's first term as President. She was born amid the struggles and trials of the new Government, and lived to the time when that Government had extended its limits from ocean to ocean, and its population increased from 4,000,000 to 60,000,000.

Presently, (14 Aug 03) the lot is bare of any buildings, with only weeds, bushes and small trees. I was able to find the back side foundation (in the weeds). (I took a small piece of flat stone from the wall as a memento.)

I also visited the “Smock” homestead at 616 Arch Street, Belle Vernon. The original “very-very old” house is still there (as I remembered it in 1943 timeframe). This house was the home of Marion “Badger” Smock and his wife Sara Jane (Culler) Smock and many Smock siblings throughout the years. Mrs. Wanda Stanley presently occupies the home. She is a step-daughter of Frank Smock. My family (my parents Robert and Thelma Smock) lived one block away at 434 Bluff St. (At the corner of Bluff and Arch Street) (1938-1944 timeframe).

The following information is taken from the Belle Vernon Area Sesquicentennial official souvenir book (1813-1814 – 1963-1964.

 Mr. and Mrs. Morris Corwin, who were among the earliest settlers, gave up the kitchen of their home so a school might be started and it served for three months as a classroom.

 Schooling in the Belle Vernon Area has come a long way in its 150 years. It started in a kitchen classroom. The first school in Belle Vernon was taught by John Hazelbaker in the kitchen of a house owned by Morris and Mary Corwin.

 The first person buried in this ground (Belle Vernon Cemetery) after its purchase was Abrah Smock, who died in Belle Vernon, September 24, 1866. Prior to this date, however, the ground had been known as the burial place of the Springer family.

 It was 1813, the year Belle Vernon was born. The territory embraced within the limits of the borough of Belle Vernon, was, prior to the formation of Fayette County in 1783, a part of Rostraver Township in Westmoreland County.

Westmoreland County comes by its name of “mother of counties” quite understandably. When it was formed the new county included all the territory of the present Westmoreland, Washington, Fayette, Green, Allegheny, Butler, Beaver, Crawford, Erie, Mercer, and Lawrence, and part of the counties of Indiana, Armstrong, Venango and Warren. Nearly one-forth of the entire state of Pennsylvania was embraced in Westmoreland County.

Notes for MARY JANE SMOCK: Obituary for Mary Smock: Mrs. Mary Jane Reeves Mrs. Mary Jane Reeves, widow of Samuel Reeves, is dead at the family homestead in Rostraver township, Westmoreland County, at the age of 97. A week ago she had a light stroke of paralysis. Mrs. Reeves was familiarly known as "Aunt Polly" by every man, woman and child who has lived in Bellevernon during the last 60 years. She was the daughter of Henry and Betsy Smock, and was born in Rostraver township. She was never on a train but once, some 20 years ago, when she went up to Smock, on the Pennsylvania's Redstone Branch, to see a brother, and never saw a street car or automobile. Mr. Reeves died July 3, 1895. Until about three years ago Mrs. Reeves could read, and then when her second eyesight failed she greatly enjoyed having someone read to her. She kept posted what was going on, and had a wonderful memory, particularly for faces and Names. She was the mother of three children, Captain John S. Reeves, who served in the Rebellion and died a few months after his father in 1895, Elizabeth, now deceased who remained at home, and Mrs. Robert Ross, at whose home she died. There are now living four grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren, the oldest of whom is 18, and the youngest 5 months of age. Mrs. Reeves was related to probably every family in Rostraver, one of the largest townships in Westmoreland county. Mrs. Reeves was one of the oldest of a family of 10 children of whom there are now four living. They are Mrs. Margaret Ong of Texas, Mrs. Caroline Hilty of Independence, MO, Samuel Smock of Smock, and Mrs. Sarah Doughlass of West Newton. Mrs. Reeves was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Belvernon for 80 years.

He married (1) SARAH ANN AKA "MARY ANN" FIELDS 1847 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, daughter of MARGARET FIELDS in Perry Township, Pennsylvania. She died 1867 in Franklin Twp. Fayette Co. Pennsylvania. He married (2) SUSAN HESS March 15, 1869 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, daughter of MARTIN HESS. She was born April 1, 1832 in Redstone Twp., Fayette Co. Pennsylvania, and died May 03, 1914 in Smock, Franklin Twp., Fayette Co. Pennsylvania.

Notes for SAMUEL SMOCK: Samuel Smock is of German descent and was born in Rostraver township, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, June 19, 1820, and is a son of Henry Smock. Samuel Smock was a very poor boy and on April 14, 1839, he went to learn the blacksmith trade with James Beazel of Belle Vernon; he was possessed of scant clothing and worked barefooted in the shop until he earned enough money to buy a pair of shoes. In three years he acquired his trade, owned a good suit of clothes worth $31 and had $79.42 in money. He now helped his parents to secure a home and then sought a home for himself. In 1844 he went to Perry township and worked until 1846, saving $500. He next worked in Westmoreland county when he went to Ohio and after a short stay removed to Belle Vernon where he first worked at $25 per month, but soon bought a lot and built him a house and shop. He pursued his trade for twenty one years at that place. At the end of that time, he had accumulated $14,000. Selling his property he bought in 1868 the farm he now owns at Smock Station, named for him. His farm contains 190 acres of excellent land costing $12,000 and for which he lately refused to take $28,000. A town is growing up on his land around the railroad station which is situated between Uniontown and Brownsville on the Monongahela division of the S. W. P. R. W. Mr. Smock in the spring of 1847 married Miss Mary Ann Fields, a daughter of Margaret Fields of Perry township. Unto this union were born the following children: William Smock, dead; Celia Smock; Elzanna Smock, dead; Roley Smock, dead; Odessa Smock; Noah Smock and Alva Smock. Mrs. Smock died in the spring of 1847 and on March 15, 1869, he married his second wife, Miss Elizabeth Hess of Redstone township. She was born April 1, 1832. In politics he is a democrat and is emphatically a self made man who in middle age by hard work and good management attained to a position of ease and affluence. ( Note: Mary Ann died in 1867 Not 1847) He started early in life in absolute want, but by industry and a strict application to business overcame every difficulty in carving out for himself a successful business career, and now in advancing years is worthily enjoying the well earned fruits of his labor.

The above came from the Biography of Samuel Smock published by Gresham and Wiley, published in 1889. Further investigation has shown it contains several errors as to Names, and Dates ( Note by Gene Smock)

Note: provided by Gene Smock, Oct 2002 Samuel Smock had a blacksmith shop (bounded by Long Alley, State Road and Market St.) in Belle Vernon for about twenty years before buying a farm in Franklin Twp, Fayette, Co. in 1868; on which a town grew up known as Smock Station and later Smock PA. Samuel’s next door neighbor’s last name was Jacobs, they were on lots 194 & 196. According to the 1872 atlas map, lot 194 (James Corwin) & 196 (Mrs Jacobs). Samuel must have sold his lot to James Corwin Jr.

I have magnified the map and can see that the Jas Corwin Jr. lots are numbered 193 & 194 (previously Samuel’s lots). The lots of Mrs. Jacobs are numbers 195 and 196

I visited the site on 14 Aug 03. Presently, Samuel’s old site is now the site of the United Methodist Church, 200 State St. Belle Vernon, PA 15012-1158, 724-929-4696 Rev. Timothy McConville, Pastor (I used to attend that church (1941-1943).

Mary7 Smock who married Morris Corwin had a son named James Corwin. It may have been this James Corwin or possibly his son (the map shows Jr.) that Samuel sold the property to. Mary7 Smock was Samuel’s aunt and the sister of “my” Abraham7 Smock and Henry7 Smock (Samuels father.)

Note: provided by Edwin K. Smock, July 2002 On 16 July 2000, I visited Samuel's gravesite. He is buried with his second wife (Susan A. Smock (Hess)) at Redstone Cemetery in Brownsville PA. (just off Rt. 40). It is a "large" granite/marble stone to the left of the main entrance (about 50 yards) The headstone gives the birth dates of he and Susan but not the dates of death. “Samuel S. Connection to SMOCK PA: Samuel8 Smock, the founder of Smock PA was a son of Henry7 Smock. Henry was a brother of Abraham7 Smock (my ggg-grandfather). Abraham7 was Samuel’s uncle and Abraham’s son Abraham8 (my gg-grandfather) was Samuel’s 1st cousin. Samuel lived many years in Belle Vernon, PA before buying the property that is now known as Smock PA.

DEATH CLAIMS SAMUEL SMOCK, AGE 96 YEARS

Founder of Town of Smock closed Useful Life - Was One of Oldest and most Beloved Residents of County ------(By L. U. Leslie )

Brownsville. Nov. 8 - Samuel Smock, age 96. Founder of the town that bears his name, Located five miles from Brownsville, and one of the oldest men in Fayette County, died at his home on the Smock Homestead Sunday Morning at 2 o'clock. Leaving behind him a life devoted too usefulness and thought of his fellowman. Mr. Smock contracted a cold about a week ago and failed rapidly, his once rugged constitution having submitted to the ravages of age. Mr. Smock was the most beloved man in the community and his sudden death cast a decided gloom over the mining town that bears his name.

Born and reared in Bellevernon, Mr. Smock spent half of his life in that village. He learned the Blacksmith Trade and followed that livelihood for about 30 years. About 40 years ago he moved from BelleVernon to the unsettled country now called Smock, and bought a large farm. He later sold part of his farm to the Warner Company. When the Pittsburgh Coal Company bought all the small Operators in that vicinity, the Warner Company's holdings were included. The Pittsburgh Coal Company then sold their share to the H. C. Frick Coal Company. That Corporation opened up the Mines under the Farm and established a thriving mining settlement. Out of respect for Mr. Smock the original owner of the land, the Management of the H. C. Frick Mine named the Mining Town "Smock”. The Community has grown rapidly and now has a Post office and Telephone Exchanges and is considered a thriving community. Through all the years, Mr. Smock retained his Homestead and watched the development of the Town he started. Of late years, he has been feeble but never has been confined to his bed until he contracted a cold a week ago. Since the death of his second Wife, about six months ago, his Daughter, Mrs. Henry Shaffer, has been keeping house for him. Mr. & Mrs. Shaffer were living a Smock at the time of Mr. Smock's death and moved their residence to that of Mr. Smock. He is survived by two Sons and one Daughter. One Son resides in Colorado and the other Son and Daughter in Kansas. Until word is received from them, no arrangements can be made for the Funeral. Undertaker J. M. Luce will have charge of the Funeral.

HOPED TO BE 100

A short time ago Mr. Smock reiterated the belief and the hope that he would live to pass the century mark. His friends also entertained the belief on account of his good health he has endured during the past several months. He was able to get about with the aid of two canes and told of his habits. Mr. Smock never smoked or chewed tobacco; He only has had one tooth for the past several years and ate but little cake, pie, butter or milk. For 32 years Mr. Smock was a Blacksmith at BelleVernon and he worked from 14 to 15 hours a day, beginning at 4 o'clock each morning. During this time he saved $14,000. out of his earnings. Forty- seven years ago he moved to Smock and with $12,000 of his savings, purchased 197 acres of land. Of the original Farm there still remains 115 acres. He gave the P. V. & C. Railroad the right of way through his farm and also the land where the Smock Station now stands and $1,000 in money. This gift opened a market for his coal and lands which netted him a neat sum. In politics he was a Democrat and enjoyed the distinction of being one who had never split the ticket. The house in which Mr. Smock lived is 93 years old, having been erected by Jonathon Sharpless a Quaker. Mr. Smock spent a considerable in remodeling and repairing his property in and around Smock. He was the last of 11 brothers and sisters. His Mother lived to be 90 years of age and his second sister 88. In 1847 he married Sarah Ann Fields, of Perry Township. and all of his children were born of this union. In 1867 his wife died and on March 15, 1869 He married a second time. His Last Wife, who was Susan Hess. died on may 3rd of this year.

Samuel Smock, founder of the Village that now bears his name and one of the Pioneer Settlers of Fayette County, left an Estate of $20.000. Although his will, which was probated yesterday before Assistant Register Henry Titterington, provides largely for the care of his Wife, those provisions were rendered void by the death of Mrs. Smock some six months ago. The Will was drawn prior th the death of Mrs. Smock. The deceased wife was to have received $5,000. together with one-third of interest in the reality of the Smock Estate. Now all of the Estate is to be divided among the four surviving Children: Noah Smock of Arkansas City, Kan. : Odessa Patterson, Oxford, Kan. : Mrs. Cecelia Shaffer, of Smock, and Allen Smock of Ceder, Col. Attorneys T. S. Lackey and Robert Hogsett. Sr.. are named Executors of the Estate and are directed to make a partition of the property at a time when in their discretion such a course can be most successfully undertaken. The property is almost entirely in Real Estate and centers about Franklin County, with a small strip in Lucerne, which is one of the oldest sites of interest in the town.

Note: In the will the first names of the Daughters, Cecelia and Odessa are reversed, Cecelia Married Jeremiah B. Patterson of Oxford, KS. Also Allen is referenced sometimes as Alva, However , both sons of his brother Noah, refered to him as "Uncle Allen" (This note: made by Gene Smock the son of Orville Smock).

Note: provided by Gene Smock, Oct 2002 Samuel's son William was born in 1849 and is not listed in 1860, Elzanna was born in 1858 and is not listed in the 1870 census, Roley born after 1860 is also not shown in the 1870 census, so I believe these three children of Samuel did not live very long. William may be buried in the Fells Church Cemetery as the Belle Vernon Cemetery was not in existance until 1766. It is possible that Samuel's first wife Sarah Ann/Mary Ann who died in 1867 and Roley and Elzanna are buried at Belle Vernon, but with out the records it is hard to be sure.

BURNED TO DEATH

Bellevernon Man Meets Awful Death on Christmas Eve

Bellevernon, Pa., Dec. 25. -- Leonard Smock was burned to death in his home near here last night as his wife listened to his agonized cries for help. Smock had been in town during the evening and was helped home by friends while under the influence of liquor. When in that condition he treated his family badly, and his wife and daughters stopped at a neighbor's instead of going home. Later, Mrs. Smock and her daughters upon going to the house found it to be in flames. Smock was heard calling to his wife for help, but the man could not be located. Being in the country, there was no way to fight the flames, and until the house was almost entirely destroyed nothing could be done.

It is believed that Smock tried to light a lamp and upset it. His wife is prostrated with grief and fears are entertained that she may lose her mind. Smock came of a good family and was aged 40 years. The family lost all their belongings and are left in destitute circumstances. [End]

Gilbert Fisher Smock (7/13/1886-10/21/1974) (Age 88) He was married to Mary Jane Amalong (11/21/1890-11/21/1981). She died on her birthday. They resided in various locations in the Belle Vernon, PA area, which includes a home on 534 Fayette St., Belle Vernon, PA. Both are buried in the Belle Vernon Cemetery (Smock plot). Gilbert was a carpenter and also the owner of a lumber yard business at the rear of his home at 534 Fayette St., Belle Vernon, PA He was also a partner at the Duwall Lumber Yard prior to going into the lumber yard business for himself. Duwall Lumber Yard was located across the street from 536 Fayette St. and was owner by Walter Duwall, son of Serenas (Rene) Smock.

Sina F. Smock (7/19/1879-7/25/1907) (Age 26) was married to Frank Springer (1868-4/13/1940). They resided in Belle Vernon, PA where he was the Postmaster. Both are buried in the Belle Vernon Cemetery (Springer plot). Frank’s father was Anslem Springer, a Belle Vernon Contractor and builder. Frank also had a brother, Joe Springer (1860-1941). Frank and Sina had no children.

Harold Ernest Smock (8/19/1890-6/1/1952) (Age 61) was married to Donna Marjorie Benner. She died on 8/20/1996 (Age 98) and is buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in West Carrollton, OH. They resided in Dayton, OH and he was an attorney. He is buried in West Carrollton, OH also.

Ada Mae Smock (2/13/1876-10/23/1951) (Age 71) was married to George H. Clark (8/5/1865-9/25/1956) (Age 91). They resided at 536 Fayette St., Belle Vernon, PA. Both are buried in the Belle Vernon Cemetery (Clark plot). George H. was in the well drilling business.

"Finley C. Smock, of near Belle Vernon, was born August 3, 1854, in Rostraver township, Westmoreland county, Pa., on the farm he now ownes and is a son of Philip and Emeline (Fleming) Smock. His grandfather, Abraham Smock, was of German descent, a farmer by occupation and lived for a time in Rostravel township, but removed to Kansas, where he died (“Kansas cannot be correct as he is buried with his wife in Fells Cemetery, Fellsburg, PA.” – Ed Smock). Politically he was formerly a whig and later a republican. James Fleming, maternal grandfather, lived and died in Rostrver township, where he was a husbandman and one of the early settlers. Philip Smock, son of Abraham and Isabella Smock (father), was born January 1, 1819, near Webster, in Rostraver township, where he followed farming and stock-raising unti his death March 20, 1879. He was of German descent, a very shrewd, industrious and successful man of business and a large property holder, owning over three hundred acres of valuable land. In politics he was a stanch [sic] republician, always taking an active part in the interest of his party and he belonged to the First Presbyterian church of Belle Vernon, Pa., while his wife was a methodist. He was married November 6, 1845, to Emeline Fleming, who bore him thirteen children, nine sons and four daughters. Although uneducated Mr.Smock was ambitious in all educational enterprises.

Finley C. Smock was educated in the public schools of his native township and has ever since devoted his time to farming. In politics he adheres to the principles of the Republican party in whose interests he is an active worker. Mr. Smock is a wide-awake farmer, keeps up to the times and is a reliable, sturdy and substantial citizen.

He was united in marriage January 5, 1882, with Kate Irons, a daughter of Jacob Irons, a farmer of Gibsonton, this county, and they have one child, Bessie, born April 15, 1884."

Notes for NOAH SMOCK: Noah and his sister Cecelia came to Kansas about 1884 or 1885.

He married Mary June Spence of Oxford and first lived south near Slate Creek in a one-room log cabin. They had 5 children: Goldie, Sam, Orville, Lottie and Odessa. The three girls died before the age of four and are buried in an abandoned cemetery 5 miles south and 1 and 1/2 miles East of Oxford.

Note: Gene Smock (30 Jan 2003) I found the grave site of my aunt Goldie/Goldy Smock daughter of Noah Smock and Mary (Spence) Smock.

In October I visited the Yeager cemetery, an abandoned cemetery, last burial there in 1908 to see if I could locate the three sisters of my father Orville. Dad said he tried to locate their graves years ago with no sucess. I can now understand probably why as the cemetery is over-grown with trees and brush. I did locate the headstone of Goldy (see attached picture) and will return in the spring to clear around it so a better picture can be taken. Goldy’s headstone reads: Goldy, Dau of Noah and Mary Smock, Died May 21, 1888, Lived 1 Mo, 24 Days. No stones were found for Lottie and Odessa.

Noah moved the family to western Kansas to farm, but after two years of crop failure they moved back. Orville remembered his father trading his shotgun for a team of mules so they could return. Noah and family moved to Newkirk Twp. Oklahoma Territory and are listed in the 1900 KS/OK Federal Census. They then moved to Arkansas City,KS where Noah worked and started a delivery service and bought a house on north second street.

In 1901 Orville accompanied his father, by team and wagon, back to Pennsylvania, to his grandfather Samuels farm which came to be known as SMOCK, Pennsylvania.

Noah sold the house in Arkansas City and bought a small farm southeast of town on the Arkansas River near the mouth of the Walnut River where he could raise horses and coon hounds. He died in 1930 at home. Mary lived until 1942 and died at her sister Lottie Wartick's home in Oxford. Both Noah and Mary were buried in the Oxford Cemetery. Neither Noah or Mary are listed in the cemetery records, however, they did not have a head stone for many years and in 1968 Orville and his son Gene set a stone for them purchased from Day Monument Company in Arkansas City.

Cecelia married J. B. Patterson. Oxford Cemetery records have her listed as Cecelia Smock Patterson. Gene's older sisters remembered her as "Aunt Cel."

NOAH SMOCK, 74, COWLEY COUNTIAN 52 YEARS, IS DEAD Noah Smock, 74 years old, for 18 years a resident of East Bolton township, one mile east of Grandview church southeast of Arkansas City, died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday at his home. He had been ill since April. Mr. Smock has been a resident of Cowley county for 52 years coming here from Fayette county, Pa. He moved from northern Cowley to the present home of the family in 1912. He was well and favorably known in this city and surrounding country. He was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church of this city. Mr. Smock was born in Belle Vernon, Pa. Surviving relatives are his widow, Mrs. Mary Smock, two sons,

Samuel and Orval Smock of route No. 2, southeast of the city; two sisters, Mrs. Celia Patterson, of Oxford, and Mrs. Odessa Schaffer of Smock, Pa., and five grandchildren. Funeral services are to be held at 10 o'clock a.m. tomorrow in the Grandview Methodist church, five miles southeast of the city. The Rev. Emory McNeil will officiate. Burial will be in the Oxford cemetery. The Grant Funeral Home is in Charge.

Notes for ORVILLE SMOCK: Obituary in the Arkansas City Traveler, Dated August 11, 1980 Orville Smock, 312 N. 8th St., died Saturday in the Veterans Hospital, Wichita. He was born on Nov.17, 1892, the son of Noah and Mary Pence Smock. He came to Arkansas City from Oxford, at the age of nine. He was married to Bertha Brodock on Nov. 15, 1922, in Wellington, They farmed near Arkansas City until moving to town. He was a self-employed carpenter. He was a World War I veteran, serving in the United States Army in France and Battery 334th Field Artillery as a field artillery gun instructor. He was a member of the Grandview Methodist Church and had taught Sunday School there several years ago. He was a member of the Wold War I Barracks, the Audobon Society and the Woodcarvers Society. He was well known in this area for his woodcarving, paintings and metal art work. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Gene, Oxford; two daughters, Mrs. Colleen Lind, Rt.3 and Mrs Corrine Pearson, Perris, Calif.; 13 grandchildren

and nine great-grandchildren. One infant son preceded him in death. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Rindt-Erdman-Oldroyd Funeral Home with the Rev. Babe Standerfer officiating. Burial will be in the Springside Cemetery A memorial in his memory has been established to Mark Massey Boy's Ranch in Dexter.

More About Orville Smock: He worked as a miller at the Arkansas City Milling Co. from 1933 until 1943. He lived on a farm southeast of Arkansas City next to the Arkansas River from 1923 until 1944. In the spring of 1944 His family was flooded out by the river, the house had mud and water damage as high as the tops of the windows, the barn and garage had big holes washed out from beneath them and all the chicken and hog houses washed down the river. Water was rising rapidly and starting to run around the driveway as He was driving the family to safety. He sold what was left of the farm and moved to town where he lived until the time of his death.

------MEMORIES OF ORVILLE SMOCK------By: Robert Smock, his Nephew

Uncle Orville was an Army Veteran of World War I. He had many talents. He was an artist (Oil Paintings Mostly) ; he was a carver of wood and stone. He carved birds and fish and painted them true to life. He was also a taxidermist.

One funny story he told as a taxidermist was that he stuffed a snake, for a doctor in town. The snake was so big, it was a long as Uncle Orville's Barn. The doctor never did take it because he didn't have a place to put it. He also stuffed a possum on a stick mounted on a board for me. I had it a long time ( untill the possum didn't have much fur left). He carved a string of fish one time and had them out on the front porch. They looked like a real string of fish hanging there, they were so true to life. He carved gun stocks that were really beautiful. He carved a buffalo out of solid walnut for one of his daughters using a nickel for a pattern. He also carved a tiger for one of the girls.

Uncle Orville had a Willy's Overland Car and one time my folks met him at the Railroad Station, Missouri Pacific, I Think. I rode with Uncle Orville and as he pulled out onto Summit Street the door on my side flew open and I went out with it, clutching it with both of my arms over the door!

He had a couple of milk goats and a different car. At that time, all cars had metal around the top but the center of the car top was soft and one morning, they woke up and their two goats were making a noise - they had gone through the soft top roof of the car and were trapped - couldn't get out.

Aunt Bertha ( Uncle Orville's Wife ), raised Guinea's. They made good watch dogs; they cackled when anyone came around; they didn't have a dog; Aunt Bertha said her guinea's were good enough.

Their first son was close to my age. His name was Orville Wayne but he died when he was young.

In 1980, Gene ( Uncle Orville's Son ), took him to Alaska and they went fishing with someone else from Arkansas City, who met them there. When they got back home, it was extremely hot and Uncle Orville wasn't feeling very well. They took him to the VA Hospital in Wichita and that's when they discovered he had cancer.

Notes for BERTHA BELLE BRODOCK: Bertha was a typical farm wife from 1923 untill 1944. On the farm at that time, heat was provided by a wood stove, water was pumped from the well, there was no electricity so light came from coal-oil lamps and she did the washing on an old Maytag gas powered washing machine. She went to town on saturdays to do the family shopping. All that changed in the spring of 1944, when the Arkansas river flooded the family out on the farm. Moving to town was a whole new experience. Gas heat, electricity, running water, a real bathroom and even a telephone. Bertha was a hard working mother, she did what she felt needed to be done. She clerked sales for a town auctioneer, and became a practical nurse, helping to take care of the elderly and new mothers. At one time she laughed and said that she had more kids running around Arkansas City than any other woman in town. Her grandmother, Lydia Turner, lived with the family for two years, later her father Bert stayed with the family until his death and her Uncle Earl and his wife Aunt Millie also came to live with her and her husband Orville, when they could no longer take care of themselves on their farm in Oklahoma.

“””A long time ago my ancestors came to this country from the Netherlands. They settled in Penna. in a town called Smock. It is situated between Brownsville and Uniontown PA. They were coal miners and worked the mine till the coal ran out. The town is still there and on the map. The Smock Klan drifted all over the USA. They were a hard working class of people. Some of them are buried in Belle Vernon and some at Redstone where there is a small church where they went to services.

Those days if you wanted to travel on good roads you had to pay toll. Outside Brownsville going east the toll bldg. is still standing. I remember going with my Dad on a trip over this road. He hauled Moving with horses and wagon. Also my grandfather and my Dad did excavating. They started the town of Donora PA. They also paved the street going from BV. to N. BV with bricks. They were the 4th family to move to Belle Vernon. The name of Belle Vernon was to be Beautiful Green.

There was a coal mine connecting Belle Vernon and Pricedale. Mostly all the minors were pretty close to their work. The mills Pittsburgh Steel, WIRE MILL, TIN MILL were about 3 to 5 miles from BV. in Monesson on the Monongahela river. There were plenty trains running hauling coal and misc from Pittsburgh to West Virginia. Also passenger trains. Today there are nothing. Every thing is rusting away. The part of B.V called down town is dead. When I was a boy you could not hardly walk on the side walk for so many people. But today you hardly see anyone. Every body is moving West.

This is as far back as I can remember. I was born in 1904 and in July I'll be 90 so you see I can remember things. It would take a book to tell you all I can remember.

Memories (Marion Smock) (as written)

My mother Jennie Smock and I went out one autumn day to pick tomatoes over the hill from our place. I remember that when she threw the harness over the horse there was a snapping sound inside her. We got the sled fixed up to the horse and proceeded up the hill and picked those tomatoes. Coming down the hill the sled turned over and we had a devil of a time picking up all the tomatoes. Mom told me to take care of the horse, she wasn’t feeling well.

She went into bed and I waited with the horse for Dad to get home. When he got home he took care of the horse and then he checked on Mother. He called her Mother, Grandma Nixon, in Todelo and told her Jennie was awful sick and she should come. He then took Mother to Lock #4 Hospital (in Charleroi). Her mother came and she talked with her for about a half an hour before she passed away. Father came home and told us Mother was gone. She died of blood poisoning I quess. It seems she busted something inside when she threw the harness and blood poisoning set in.

The children were farmed out to different people. Myself, Jake and Hazel (a baby) went to Toledo with Grandma Nixon, but there were too many for her to handle so Jake and I were sent to Father’s Mother Sara Jane Smock at 616 Arch St. in Belle Vernon, PA. (Jennie had expressed that she did not want any of us kids to end up with Sara Jane before she died.) Jake was moved on to live with Aunt Grace Noels in Republic, PA. Aunt Grace was Uncle Glenn’s wife, or should I say Uncle Glenn was her last husband. Uncle Glenn was my father’s brother. My brother Robert was raised by my Dad’s sister Aunt Dink (we never knew her by any other name). She lived in West Virginia. Dice was raised by John Philips in Bentlyville, PA. He was some relative but I don’t know how.

Grandma Sara Jane was a small, frail woman but everyone was terrified of her. She chased people off her side walk and would make them go around it. I experienced many a whooping from the mean little old lady.

I married in 1921 to Margaret “Tadpole” Forker. She went by Tad. She died in 1926.

There were two families of Smocks, no relation. On my Mothers side was Grandad Leonard Smock. He burned up in a fire Christmas Eve. Grandma Nixon was his wife. She married Mr. Nixon after Grandad burned. Her name was Carnes before marriage. Hixenball and John Irons was some relation. My mothers name was Jennie, she was a sister of Aunt Ethel and Aunt Hazel who died in Phoenix, AZ. Uncle Kerr Smock was a brother, Aunt Lillian and Aunt Ora Heldebrand was sisters. They scattered all over.

On my Dads side My Granddad was Marion Smock. They called him Badger. Married my Grandmother Sarah Jane Culler. Brother of old Kerr Culler who died with his felt boots on. The rest I don’t recall right now. My Grandma had 13 children, Glen, Jake, Frank, Pete, Hannah, Mance (Samantha), Betsy, Dink (Blanche), Elizabeth, George (Georgianna ?), three died, I don’t know their names.

They were one of the first settlers in B.V.. A town of Smock lies just outside of Brownsville, PA. is where they settled when they came here from the Netherlands in the sixteen century. I tried to get all the data but it would cost a fortune to get everything. There is some Smocks up around Atlantic related to some of the Smocks way back.

GLEN SMOCK: MARRIED ZELMA WHO DIED. HE HAD TWO BOYS, BOISE AND &… BUT THEY WERE RAISED BY SARA. UNCLE MARION AND UNCLE DICE WERE ALSO RAISED BY SARAH. WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN THEIR GRANDMOTHER.

WHEN GLEN SMOCK’S WIFE DIED HE THEN MARRIED (GRACE KNOWLES). SHE LEFT HIM (GOT A DIVORCE) AND LIVED HER LIFE OUT WITH JOE KNOWLES, EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE NEVER MARRIED BECAUSE JOE NEVER GOT A DIVORCE.

WHEN DAD’S MOTHER DIED, GRACE KNOWLES RAISED HIM UNTIL HE WAS 15 YEARS OLD. AUNT HAZEL WAS RAISED BY GRANDMA NIXON.

PETE SMOCK LIVED IN INDIANAPOLIS FOR MANY YEARS AND HAD TWO CHILDREN NAMED MARYJO AND DALLAS

FRANK SMOCK--LIVED IN BELLE VERNON AND MOVED TO CINCINATTI

MANCE SMOCK-MARRIED DAVE ALLBRIGHT AND THEY HAD CLIFTON (MUTT) ALLBRIGHT( and David “Davey”) AND ONE GIRL. MOTHER DID NOT REMEMBER HER NAME. MUTT MARRIED A REAL PERSNIKITY LADY AND THEY HAD A DAUGHTER, BUT THIS LADY WOULDN'T EVEN LET MUTT HOLD HIS DAUGHTER. THEY EVENTUALLY SPLIT UP AND MUTT DIED.

SHE WAS THEN TOLD THAT HER FATHER LEONARD SMOCK HAD DIED IN THE FIRE. (I DON'T KNOW THEY DIDN'T TELL HER BEFORE SHE WALKED HOME AND SAW THE CHARRED RUINS OF HER HOME.)

AFTER LEONARD SMOCK DIED IN THE FIRE IN HIS HOME, GREAT GRANDMA (MARY SMOCK, MAIDEN NAME CARNES, ONE BROTHER CORY) THEN MARRIED CHARLEY NIXON AND THEY DIDNT HAVE ANY OFFSPRING. They then moved to Toledo, Ohio.

GRANDMA NIXON ALSO HAD ANOTHER SISTER WHO BROKE HER LEG AND GRANDMA NIXON TOOK CARE OF HER. GRANDMA ALSO HAD BROTHERS IN COULDERSPORT, PA.

To Jacob’s left (plus one empty space), is the grave of: Philip Shepler “Died May 22, 1829 aged 88 yrs. There is an American flag with a Revolutionary War bronze emblem/holder attached near/to Philip’s headstone

The grave of Elizabeth (Shepler) Smock reads: “Elizabeth” wife of Henry Smock died Sept 27, 1882 aged 93 yrs. (Her birth would equate to 1789.) There are two headstones to Elizabeth’s immediate left however, they are unreadable. The closest one may read Davis R. (I could not be sure but that is my best guess.).

There are numerous Shepler graves within a 20 yd circle of Abraham’s grave. Many are not readable. I will list what I could make out.

The evidence of who John and his brother Henry (who stayed in Va.) father was is found in the Hardy County, West Virginia Deeds Book 1 page 167. (Hardy Co. was formed from Hampshire Co.) It is dated 10 Nov. 1787, refering to land that was left to John and his brother Henry by their father Henry Sr.

The presents of John Shepler in Fayette Co. Pa. in the German Twp. is recorded in the 1790 census. John and Elizabeth moved from Fayette Co. to Westmoreland, Co. Elizabeth died thers in 1795 and John before 19 Feb 1799. He is listed in Westmoreland Co. Administration Docket Vol. AAD page 140 letters of Administration for the estate of John Shipler deceased was granted 19 Feb. 1799 to Peter and Mathias Shipler.

Notes for MATHIAS SHEPLER: Matthias Shepler and his two brothers Peter and Philip, along with their father John (Shiplor/Shipler) came to America from Germany about 1755 and settled in Virginia. In 1783 John sold his land in Virginia and they all moved to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Matthias took possession of 400 acres that included the highest point in Rostraver Township and the hill became known as Sheplers Hill.

Shepler, Mathias, abstract of will, written August 13, 1821, recorded April 23, 1823. Executors Issac and Jacob Shepler, witnesses Robert Bermingham and John Scott.. Gives land, livestock and farm implemrnts to son Jacob on conditions he pay funeral expences and all other bequests. He is also to provide for his mother and if he fails to do so or if she chooses to live with any other of her children Jacob shall pay her board and living expences. Gives his house and all furniture therein to his wife Margaret while she lives.

Gives following children each one dollar: John's heirs, Margaret, Philip and Abraham.

Gives two hundred and fifty dollars each to Mary, Catherine and Issac. From Mary's bequest is to be deduceted, "She giving credit out of it on a receipt for nearly twenty-four pounds I paid to her in the State of Ohio."

Notes for MARGARET HOUSEMAN: The following is an authors note about Mathias Shepler and Margaret Houseman which comes from the book, " The Houseman Family " author Harry Houseman Frazier, Tiffin, Ohio: 1937

The reader is doubtless curious about the name Margaret Houseman, who married Mathias Shepler. The author has been even more curious, but is unable to place her with certainty. It would seem that she was the daughter of John Houseman, a sister of the first Christopher, but for one fact; viz: the supposed year of her birth was 1754 and this would make her twenty-two years younger than her brother. While this is not impossible, it is somewhat improbable, Deeds,wills and other public records of Westmoreland and Fayette Counties do not indicate there was any other family of Housemans in western Pennsylvania before the Revolution. If we were to prove that the first John Houseman had children.

(note by Gene Smock) The author also states the Houseman family settled in Westmoreland County along with the Hill family. Joseph Hill being the first settler of Westmoreland County.

They are listed in the same dwelling (the Shepler Hill property). This section shows “Belle Vernon Rd” Rostraver Twp., Westmoreland Couinty.

In following the entries of names, "the names come right toward my house on Ridge Road", listing (in order): Family names of: Lynn, Smith (3 families), Wilson, Shepler (John 74, Josephine w 60) then, "Shadrick Shepler" 36, wife Abigal 37, Edith D 16, Violet D 11, Ruth D 9, ?ady D 7, John S 3, George S 1... (This would make Shed about 71 in 1945 which fits my thoughts of him.) John and Josephine are most likely his parents as they are listed in the same dwelling as a separate family.)

The list of families continues to my old house (on Ridge Road – up the hill behind Rehoboth Presb. Church) which was originally owned by a black family by the name of Mason G.S. 54, wife Susan 47 census lists them as "B" (black)... My grandfather bought the house from the widow Susan A. Mason on 25 Aug 1921.

Elizabeth, according to John S. Van Voorhis, author of THE OLD and NEW MONONGAHELA, was the daughter of Peter Shepler the "Older". This is not the case, nor is the biography of her son Samuel Smock stating Elizabeth was the daughter of Mary Baxter and Philip Shepler son of "Mott" Shepler. Peter Shepler the "Older" son of John Shepler/Shipler and Elizabeth Peters married Mary Hammond and their daughter Elizabeth was born 1775 in Winchester, Hampshire Co., Virginia, died 18 March 1819. Philip Shepler (son of Mathias) married Mary Hill daughter of Joseph Hill III and their first son John S. was born 3 Nov 1818. The "Older" Peter's son, Peter married Mary Payne and Elizabeth "Betsy" is their daughter and the wife of Henry Smock. On Elizabeth's stone at Fells Church Cemetery is "died Sept 27, 1882 aged 93" which equates to 1789. (see below census years, which seem to make her birth year 1792)

Email from DeAndrea Folster 19 May 2003 In Part: "The information that Fred Shepler sent to me was the two girls Elizabeth and Sarah were the daughters of Peter Shipler, He listed Elizabeth "Betsy" Shepler also the wife of Henry Smock. That she died 18 March 1819. I have Henry Smock was listed in the 1820 census of Rostraver, Westmoreland, PA. I also have Sarah Shepler as being married to Abraham Smock." The information from DeAndrea helped out a greatly in sorting out which Peter Shepler was the father of Elizabeth and her sister Sarah Isabelle. The Elizabeth born 1775 and died in 1819 was the daughter of Philip Shipler/Shepler and Mary Hammond.

1860 Census Rostraver Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA Lists Elizabeth Smock age 68, Occupation Weaver living with her daughter Caroline age 23 Occupation Seamstress. Caroline was Elizabeth's youngest daughter and married Lewis C. Hilty the following year.

1870 Census Rostraver Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA Lists Elizabeth as "Lizzi" Smock living with D. Douglass and her daughter Sarah (Smock) Douglass and her age as 78 which agrees with the 1850 & 1860 census as to her being born in 1792.

Notes for MARY JANE SMOCK: Obituary for Mary Smock: Mrs. Mary Jane Reeves Mrs. Mary Jane Reeves, widow of Samuel Reeves, is dead at the family homestead in Rostraver township, Westmoreland County, at the age of 97. A week ago she had a light stroke of paralysis. Mrs. Reeves was familiarly known as "Aunt Polly" by every man, woman and child who has lived in Bellevernon during the last 60 years. She was the daughter of Henry and Betsy Smock, and was born in Rostraver township. She was never on a train but once, some 20 years ago, when she went up to Smock, on the Pennsylvania's Redstone Branch, to see a brother, and never saw a street car or automobile. Mr. Reeves died July 3, 1895. Until about three years ago Mrs. Reeves could read, and then when her second eyesight failed she greatly enjoyed having someone read to her. She kept posted what was going on, and had a wonderful memory, particularly for faces and Names. She was the mother of three children, Captain John S. Reeves, who served in the Rebellion and died a few months after his father in 1895, Elizabeth, now deceased who remained at home, and Mrs. Robert Ross, at whose home she died. There are now living four grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren, the oldest of whom is 18, and the youngest 5 months of age. Mrs. Reeves was related to probably every family in Rostraver, one of the largest townships in Westmoreland county. Mrs. Reeves was one of the oldest of a family of 10 children of whom there are now four living. They are Mrs. Margaret Ong of Texas, Mrs. Caroline Hilty of Independence, MO, Samuel Smock of Smock, and Mrs. Sarah Doughlass of West Newton. Mrs. Reeves was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Belvernon for 80 years.

The grave of Elizabeth (Shepler) Smock reads: “Elizabeth” wife of Henry Smock died Sept 27, 1882 aged 93 yrs. (Her birth would equate to 1789.) She perhaps descended from Dirck Volckerszen, Norwegian, who arrived in New Netherland in 1632, married Christina, daughter of Guillaume Vigne, eight children. The family name now is “Fulkarson”. He was also known as "Leonard Hendrickse Smock" He relocated in 1716 and came to reside in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The date of Leonard’s relocation coincides with that of the incoming Dutch settlers from New York to the Valley of the Raritan in New Jersey. The settlement of Dutch families a Indian's Ferry, now New Brunswick, was about this date. Leendert and Sarah witnessed the baptism of Leendert Boice on 19 June 1728 in Sourland Dutch Church, Somerville, Somerset County, New Jersey. Leendert left a will on 11 October 1738 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey; His brother, Johannes, is assigned as executor. Sarah (Barents) Smock’s estate was probated on 2 May 1755 in Somerset County, New Jersey.

He was the son of Mathias Smock. He married Guertje Harmens Coerton Abt. 1668 in New Utrecht, Kings County, New York.

Notes for Hendrick Matthyse Smock: He was also known as Hendrick Mattyse Smack. He accompanied the migration of Swane Jensen (his mothers brother) in 1654 to New Utrecht, Kings County, New York: from Utrecht, Utrecht Province, Netherlands. He bought land on January 16, 1665 in New Utrecht, Kings County, Long Island, New York. He bought Plantation lot 10, containing 30 morgans (about 60 acres), from Jacques Cortelyou. He was appointed as the first magistrate (or constable) in 1669 in New Utrecht, Kings County, Long Island, New York. This appointment was under the English following the submission of the Dutch powers to the English in 1664. He was further appointed magistrate in 1673, 1676, 1679, 1682 and 1689. He appeared in the census of 1675 in New Utrecht, New York: On the assessment roll. He sold a farm to Hans Hansen in 1677. He and Guertje Harmens Coerton became members of the Reformed Dutch Church under Domine Van Zuuren in 1678 in New Utrecht, New York. He appeared in the census of 1683 in New Utrecht, New York:

The name of Hendrick Matthysen Smock's wife was: Geertje (Guertje) HARMENS, daughter of Harmen COERTEN and Aertje Gerrits. I am not aware that Geertje ever used "Coerten" (a patronymic) as a family name. Coerten is, of course, a patronymic, indicating that the name of Harmen's father was "Coert" (also spelled Koert). The family was from Voorthuizen in the province of Guelderland, and came over on "de Trouw," which set sail on 12 Feb 1659. According to a ship "passenger list" (actually a record of passengers owing money for their passage), there were five children in the family, aged 17, 9, 8, 6, and 5. Another source gives their names as: Gysbertje, the 17 year old; Reyckje, Neeltje, Geertje, and Jan. Thus, it seems that Geertje was the six year old, which would make her date of birth 1652 (or 1653 prior to 12 Feb 1659).

According to Teunis G. Bergen, Early Settlers of Kings County, Long Island, N. Y.,page 264, "Smack or Smock, Hendrick Matthyse, emigrated in 1664; m. Geertje Harmens; d. after June 1708." John C. Smock, Genealogical Notes on the Smock Family in the United States, states on page 3, that "Hendrick Matthyse Smock died after 1708 and is wife in that year," citing as his source the above referenced work by Teunis G. Bergen. Thus, it is not clear to me exactly where Dr. Smock got the information that Geertje died in 1708. It seems likely that the family was then living on Staten Island. It seems that Hendrick returned to New Utrecht, but it is not clear exactly when. In any event, he is listed as a resident of New Utrecht in 1712. Hendrick must have been well along in years by then, well over 70.
