Sub plans for 10/13/17

Good morning Michael, thank you for subbing for me today. Today we are on a regular bell schedule, the schedules are posted on the wall by the windows at the front of the room. Today you will be taking over my math classes. I teach one intensive math class (period 1) that has 6th – 8th grade. This class is for students who are significantly behind in math. They are really well behaved and you will really enjoy them. Periods 2, 3, and 4 are my KEMS which is math support for students who are just a little behind. I teach one core math class 5th period and it is full. I made a power point presentation with directions for each class. Everything will be posted on my webpage for easy access or you can click on the following hyperlink and it will take you directly to my Sub Plans Page. Sub Plans Page I will also have a printed copy on my desk along with my sub book. If for some reason the hyperlink doesn’t work you can go to the Chinook Middle School homepage and select teacher pages and you will see a link with my name. Then go to my homepage and click on the link that says sub plans. You will want to use the projector remote to turn on the projector and it will also change the slides when you are in the power point presentation mode. Use the page up and down button on the left side of the remote to advance forward and the page up button to go back to the previous slide. At the front of the room is a wireless mouse and keyboard which allows you to maneuver through the power point presentation so you do have to be tied to the desk in the back of the room. I didn’t get my sub plans finished for Monday so I will work on them over the weekend and you will have them when by Monday morning.

General Notes I don’t anticipate any problems but just in case, these two extensions will get the front office and they can provide any assistance you may need. Extension 36120 will get you Karmen Galvin and 36117 will get you Kris Garrett. Also I take first lunch which after second period. My planning period is during 4th period.

Emergency: All the emergency plans are in the substitute binder that you picked up in the office. If by chanced you need to evacuate the building the most important thing it to grab the orange bucket and the sign with my name. Then head out to the field behind the school.

Bathroom: Students are expected to use the bathroom during their passing time. I don’t let them use it in the first 10 minutes or the last 10 minutes unless it is an emergency. If I do let them go to the bathroom, they need to fill out the passport section of their binder and then just stamp it with my name. They leave their planner here and then grab the bathroom pass by the door. If they go somewhere other than the bathroom, they need to fill out the passport which is in the back of their planner. Then just use my stamp which is by my computer. If they don’t happen to have their planner then fill out a blue hall pass also on my desk by my computer.

Warrior Points: Next to my computer there is a stack of purple Pride Points which we use to recognize students who are making good choices. I typically hand out to students who come into class and get busy filling in their planner. When the students see me handing them out often they will get busy doing what they are supposed to do. Feel free to hand out liberally.

Misbehavior: If a student is disruptive or disrespectful you can call Academy which is basically ISS and either Laura or Sharon can come down and help the student get back on track. If they can’t get back on track they will send take them to portable 8. Hopefully you won’t need to use them. If there is a student who is having even minor issues, please let me know the student’s name and I will call parents when I get back.

Substitute Manual: In the manual you will find a list of students for each period. I also created a seating chart and I believe they are up to date. Also you will find notes about students who have health conditions, 504 plans and IEPs.

Passing Time: Teachers are expected to be in the hall during passing time monitoring students and greeting them. I usually let my students begin entering the classroom early to reduce crowding in the hallway. I can stand at the door and monitor the classroom and the students in the hallway. Once the one minute bell rings then I come into the classroom.

Friday

9:20-10:20 Period 1: The students are using a new program called i-ready. It is a new program we are using for the first time this year. I split the kids into two groups and do small group instruction with one group while the other group is on the computer. I am totally ok if you want to have them work on the computer for the entire period, I would give them a break about half way through. Then for the second half they can do Khan Academy. They know what problems to work on. I would recommend you just go around the room and check with and ask what they are working on. Also for the last 10 minutes you could give them some free time to go to cool math. This is a pretty easy group to work with, I know you will enjoy them.

Period 2, 3, and 6: For my KEMS students I would like them to complete Problem Meaning Model worksheet. These are similar to the problems they did in their KEMS workbook so they should have no problem completing them. There is an answer key on top but I put it together in a hurry so I hope there are no mistakes. If there is time I would like you to correct the papers in class. They can correct their own papers but they must use a red pen. Each box is worth one point for a total of 12 points. On the answer key I used common denominators but if they use the invert and multiply method that is ok too. I am trying to get them to see the benefit of using common denominators whenever possible.

Period 5: This will be your most challenging class primarily because it is maxed out at 32 students. We have been working on dividing fractions with models. Today I would like them to do a quiz on Cornell Notes. We started using Cornell notes this past week which is one of the AVID strategies. It is simply a process for them to take structured notes. For the quiz they can use their Cornell notes on the quiz. So if they took good notes in class and kept their notes in their binder, they should have no problem passing the quiz. This my way rewarding the students who follow along in class and keep their binder organized. After that I would like you to show them a video from Khan Academy on dividing mixed numbers. Dividing Mixed Numbers We haven’t covered this topic a great deal. After watching the video I have a worksheet that they do to get additional practice. All my worksheets will be on the long table by the door.

I hope all goes well, it should overall this is a really nice bunch of kids and I think you will really enjoy working with them.

Fred Robischon There are some vocabulary power points on my web page. How I use them in class is I project them onto to the screen. The first slide is the definition and the second slide is the answer. I have students use the whiteboards to write the answer. They should not reveal the answer until I tell them to. This prevents other students from stealing their answers. After they hold up their answer I say two point if they got the correct answer and they spelled it correctly. If they get the correct answer but it is spelled wrong they get 1 point. The kids seem to really enjoy the game and it get a little crazy but it is fun. Since there are so many kids in 5th period I would have them partner with their shoulder partner and then they can take turns writing the answer. I let the keep their own score.
