4. Date of admission of course: 10-10-2012
5. Title of the topic:
“COMPARATIVE PHARMACEUTICO- ANALYTICAL STUDY OF KALYANA KSHARA WITH THREE DIFFERENT SNEHA DRAVYAS” 6) BRIEF RESUME OF INTENDED WORK
6.1) Need for the study:
Ksharas are derivatives of plant drug ashes,in the form of solutions or solid, they are called as drava kshara or curna kshara. Kshara is the most important one among sastra and anusastra, because it does functions like, excision, cutting and scraping, mitigates all the three dosas and is suitable for being used by special methods.
Kshara is called since it destroys the vitiated tissues and makes them fall off.Kshara also having the meaning of hinsa or viloance.some here substitute word meaning purification of tissues.
• According to acaryas the kshara gunas are as follows
CARAKA1 SUSRUTA2 VAGBHATA3 Tiksna Natitiksna Natitiksana Usna Not so mrdu Not so mrdu Laghu Anatisukla Sweta varna Ruksa Slaksana(/Mrutsna) Slaksana Kledi Picchila Picchila Pakta(paki) Avisyandi Avisyandi Vidarana Siva(soumya) Sukhanirvapya Dahakaraka Sighrakari Sighragami Dipana Sikhari Chedana Natiruk Agni sadrsa
Types of kshara are paniya kshara(Drinking the solution of alkalies) and pratisaraniya kshara(Application of alkalies externally).
Kalyana kshara is an ayurvedic formulation, which is mentioned in Sahasrayoga4 in the context of bhasmaksharadi yoga, and astanga hridayam5,astanga samgraha6 in the treatment of arshas This is an attempt to comparatively evaluate the formulation kalyana kshara prepared with Tila taila,Eranda Taila and Go gritham as the sneha.
6.2) Review of literature
Extensive literary review will be done regarding ksarakalpa, and kalyna kshara. The reference of kalyana kshara regarding its phytochemical properties, medical uses are also collected and analysed. The references for this are cited in the list. Kalyana kshara mentioned in Astanga hridayam is taken for the present study.
Previously done some research works illustrating the preparation of Ksharas are as follows:

6.3)Objective of the study
1. To compile classical references of Kshara kalpa and comparatively discuss them with modern literatures. 2. To prepare three different samples of Kalyana Kshara using sneha dravyas(ghrta/eranda taila/tila taila)]as per Standard Operative Procedures. 3. To comparatively analyze kalyana kshara samples with classical and advanced analytical techniques. 7.0) Materials & Methods:
7.1) Source of the data:
This being a pharmaceutico- analytical study, the data and raw materials are collected from reliable sources.
Pharmaceutical source: The Kshara samples will be prepared in the PG Department Laboratory of Bhaishajya Kalpana, Muniyal Institute of Ayurveda medical Sciences, Manipal. Minimum of three different samples will be prepared as below. Batch I – Following classical kshara preparation method and using eranda taila as sneha. Batch II - Following classical kshara preparation method and using tila taila as sneha. Batch III - Following classical kshara preparation method and using go ghrita as sneha. 7.2) Method of Data Collection: Following raw materials are collected from reliable source and authenticated for identity, quality and purity.
Trikatu
Sunthi(Zingiber officinale)
Marica(Piper nigrum)
Pippali(Piper longum)
Tripatu
Saindava lavana(Rock salt)
Sauvarcha lavana(Black salt)
Bida lavana (Blacksalt[officialsubstitute])
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)
Vibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica)
Amalaki (Embilica officinalis)
Danti (Baliospermum montanum)
Bhallataka (Semicarpus anacardium)
Citraka (Plumbago rosea)
Tila tailam (Sesamum indicum oil)
Gomutra (cow’s urine)
Go grita (ghee)
Eranda tailam (castor oil) Procedure: Trikatu, tripatu, srestha(haritaki, bibhitaki, amlaki)aruskara(ballataka),danticitraka, all these drugs are taken one part each and are powdered and soaked in sneha(tila taila/eranda taila/go ghrta) and cow’s urine. Then kept overnight, next day it is kept inside two earthen saucers and sealed with mud. After the mud get dried, the sealed saucers are kept inside a heap of twenty six dry cow dungs cakes and set on fire. After cooling the saucers are taken out and the medicine collected. This medicine is consumed along with ghee or food.
Assessment Criteria:- 1. Pharmaceutical study:-
Three batches will be prepared as per the Standard Operative Procedure giving importance to the process validation and equipment validation. Changes occurring in each and every step, temperature pattern, final yield, product characteristics etc will be keenly observed, recorded and analysed. 2.Analytical study:-
The final product of kalyana kshara will be evaluated with the following parameters. • Organoleptic characters:- • Colour • Odour • Taste • Touch • Physico-chemical parameters:- • Loss on drying at 1050c/moisture content • Extractive values in water and alcohol • pH value • Fat content • Qualitative tests for tannins, alkaloids, glycosides, saponins and bioflavonoids • Thin layered chromatography HPTLC/HPLC with special reference to the markers • Quantitative estimation of elements like Na, K, Ca etc.
