Mobile County Public Schools Title I Parent Involvement Plan Pearl Haskew Elementary School

During the first quarter that school is in session, Pearl Haskew Elementary will hold its annual meeting for all parents of participating children in the Title I School-wide Program. Parents are notified of the meeting through (1) notices sent home by students, (2) school marquee and (3) website notices and public postings in English and Spanish. Topics to be discussed at this year’s meeting are:

 The Title I Program  An explanation of the school’s curriculum and the state’s content standards  The school-wide School Action for Excellence Plan (SAE Plan)  The School Parental Involvement Plan  School Parent Compacts  The Parent Center  Parent Surveys

The leadership and staff at Pearl Haskew Elementary have a strong belief in the importance of parental involvement and therefore have put measures in place to offer parent meetings on a flexible schedule. Parent resources and information are available in the parent resource room.

Pearl Haskew Elementary believes in involving parents in all aspects of its Title I School-wide Program. We have parent representatives on our School-wide Advisory Committee who were active participants in the development of the plan. Each year, the school-wide plan, including the parental involvement plan, is reviewed and evaluated. Results of parent surveys are reviewed by the parent representatives and the entire school-wide advisory council in determining needed changes.

At the annual meeting of parents at the beginning of the school year, Pearl Haskew Elementary School will hold a general meeting where information will be presented about the Title I Program. They will learn about how to schedule parent-teacher conferences, volunteer opportunities, and how they can participate in decisions related to the education of their child. They will be given a copy of the Parental Involvement Plan, The Parents-Right-To-Know and information regarding complaints.

Pearl Haskew Elementary will review the school-parent compact in May. All parents will be given a copy of the new compact at the beginning of school. The compact will be explained to the parents, and they will be asked to sign the compacts signifying their commitment to working in partnership with the school and their child in ensuring that their child is successful in school. The compacts will be discussed with teachers at data meetings. Each teacher will be given the responsibility to explain the compact to students and obtain the students’ signatures. The teachers will house the compacts in his/her classroom for use during parent-teacher and/or student-teacher conferences. To ensure effective involvement of parents, to support a partnership among Pearl Haskew Elementary, parents, and the community, and to improve student academic achievement Pearl Haskew Elementary shall:

1. provide training for parents of participating children in understanding such topics as the State’s academic content standards and State student academic achievement standards, State and local academic assessments, the requirements of Title I, and how to monitor their child’s progress and work with teachers to improve the achievement of their children. Pearl Haskew will accomplish much of this through its annual parents’ meeting to be held at the beginning of the school year and through one-on-one partnership conferences with the parents. At the annual meeting, parents will be given an overview of the School Action for Excellence Plan and an overview of the Title I Program, what services will be offered, and how parents have the right to be involved in their children’s education.

2. provide parenting classes throughout the year on various topics including but not limited to reading with your child, creating a home learning environment, working as a partner with your child’s teacher, and health and safety tips. We will also offer computer training for parents.

3. educate teachers, office personnel, and other school staff, with the assistance of parents, in the value and utility of contributions of parents, and in how to reach out to, communicate with, and work with parents as equal partners, implement and coordinate parents programs, and build ties between parents and the school. Pearl Haskew will continue to work with its teachers through in- services, faculty meetings, grade-level meetings, and data meetings in understanding the importance of parental involvement and parents as partners in education. All staff is expected to welcome parents to the school, as appropriate, and to work with our facilitator in meeting parents’ needs for their children.

4. to the extent feasible and appropriate, coordinate and integrate parental involvement programs and activities with other federal programs, and conduct other activities, such as parent resource centers, that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children.

5. ensure that information related to school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities is sent to the parents of participating children in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand.

6. provide such other reasonable support for parental involvement activities under this section as parents may request. Pearl Haskew Elementary makes every effort to work with parents in meeting their requests as related to their involvement in their children’s education.

Pearl Haskew Elementary, to the extent practicable, provides opportunities for the participation of parents with limited English proficiency and parents with disabilities. In addition, we have a bilingual teacher who is available to assist in verbal communications with these parents. Every effort is made to accommodate parents with disabilities. Pearl Haskew Elementary is a handicapped-accessible building.
